BOSTON, MA - The Minutemen returned to The Track at New Balance for their first varsity meet of the 2024-2025 Indoor Season on Thursday. There, the Arlington Spy Ponders were anxiously waiting to see how they measured up to the defending Middlesex League Champions. The Lex girls' proved to be as good as advertised, as they won by a score of 62-34 over Arlington. On the boys' side, the meet had all the drama of any championship meet. In the end, as all great track meets do, it came down to the relay. However, the Spy Ponders were too much to handle and earned the win over LHS by a score of 54 to 46.
Perhaps the highlight of the meet came after the relays had wrapped up. Over in the Weight Throw ring, junior Ainsley Cuthbertson turned in a record breaking performance. LHS's school record holder in the Hammer Throw unleashed a bomb on her final throw of the competition. Cuthbertson sent the 20-pound implement 41'7.50", which broke the record set by Janna Lee (LHS '19) five years ago. Along with Cuthbertson's big day, junior Aubrey Deardorf earned a victory and qualified for the MIAA Division 1 Championships in each of her three events. She began the day by cruising to a win in the 55m Dash with a time of 7.49 seconds. Despite having no facility to safely practice the Long Jump indoors in Lexington, Deardorf proved to be in strong form early in the season. Her best jump saw her fly out to a mark of 17'9.25", which won the event, and is the farthest jump in Massachusetts on the young season. Deardorf finished off her day with fellow classmates Bruguers Sagues and Felice Haverly, along with sophomore Marissa Hao to earn the win in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:49.19. Earlier in the meet, freshman Mackenzie Callahan made her high school debut for Lexington. She turned in a great performance to earn the victory in the 1000m in a Divisional qualifying time of 3:16.95. Callahan came back in the 4x400m Relay with freshmen Cecilia Kvaal and Amelia Whorton, along with sophomore Erin Ehmann to pickup another win and Divisional qualifying time of 4:19.16.
While the Lex girls' were lighting it up, LHS's boys were battling to fend off the tremendous effort turned in by the Spy Ponders. After senior captain Simon Tandeih earned a tie for second in the High Jump with a leap of 5'8", The Minutemen were down 28-44 with just the 2 Mile, Shot Put, and the relays to go. With 51 points guaranteeing victory in a dual meet, Lexington needed some big performances in the final four events. Sophomore Trevor Stevens (9:55.22) delivered a victory in the 2 Mile for his teammates, which earned five much needed points. Meanwhile, junior Sam Finch had battled his way to close of 10-second gap for third place in the second half of the race. As he came to the penultimate lap, Finch moved by Arlington Junior Daichi Collins and looked to be in the clear. However, Collins dug deep and found another gear in the final lap to take back third place. That, along with Rohan McAuliffe's second place finish, left the score at 33-48. Over in the Shot Put area, the LHS's Bomb Squad breathed new life into The Minutemen's chances. Juniors Franz Schroeder (41'1.25") and Christian Brown (39'3.50") earned a one-two finish, and eight key points to make the score 41-49. This meant, LHS had to win both relays in order to grab victory away from Arlington. In the 4x200m, sophomores Cayden Chambers and Shreyas Hanchinamani, senior Tim George, and Tandeih were called on to get the job done. They executed a great race and got the baton around the track in 1:33.22 to earn a big five points, which left the score at 46-49. For Lexington, it was the team of freshman Mateo Sanchez de Rojas, and seniors Saleem Karachi, Will Fletcher, and Zach Barry that were tapped to try to deliver a victory in the 4x400m Relay. The freshman got things off to a fantastic start with an impressive 54.2 opening leg to put The Minutemen in first. Karachi, who was called in as a last minute alternate, managed a tremendous 54.7 split to keep his team in contention. However, the third leg saw Arlington junior Alexander LaSpina pull away from Fletcher, which left a sizeable gap for Barry to try and cover. LHS's senior harrier stormed after Arlington's Andy Cheung and began to reel him in. As the race approached the final stretch it became clear that Cheung had the room he needed to hold off Barry's charge, and the Spy Ponders' senior crossed the line first to the roar of his teammates. For his efforts, Barry turned in a 52.6 split that gave The Minutemen a time of 3:36.24.
