BOSTON, MA - The Minutemen were back in full team action on Friday morning against Belmont. After a disappointing defeat last week, Lexington's boys were excited to get back to work against the Marauders. In the end LHS won decisively, taking the top spot in 11 of 12 events en route to an 86-14 victory. The Lex girls were nearly just a dominant in victory, as they too won 11 of 12 events. In the end, LHS went on to win by a score of 77-15.
LHS captain Simon Tandeih led the way for the boys. He began the meet with a personal best time of 7.84 seconds to win the 55m Hurdles. That performance also earned him the qualifying standard for the MIAA Division 1 Championships. Tandeih then turned to the Long Jump runway where his final leap landed him at 20'0" exactly. That put him in a tie for first that he won on a tiebreaker because he had the best second jump (19'10") of the competition. At the end of the meet, Tandeih was back to compete in the High Jump. After a clean sheet had him over 5'10", the LHS high jumper cleared the bar at 6'0" for the first time in his career. That performance won him the event and earned him his third Divisional qualifying mark of the day. While Tandeih had himself a day, the Mile was the top event for Lexington at the meet. Senior Max Zhang ran a tactically sound race to hold off the hard charge from sophomore Trevor Stevens by one-hundredth of a second. The pair went 4:37.60 and 4:37.61 respectively, with both hitting the Divisional qualifying mark. Along with the top two, sophomore Owen Ross (4:42.20) broke out the golden broom to sweep the event with his third place finish. The golden broom was also out in the 1000m as sophomore Arjun Raha (2:41.71) had a great season debut. His Divisional qualifying performance was followed up by another one from an LHS runner. Senior James Joseph finished the race second in a time of 2:44.27. Fellow classmate Will Fletcher polished off the sweep with a Middlesex League Championship qualifying time of 2:49.50.
Freshman Amelia Whorton took a major step forward on Friday in her second competition of the season. Last week LHS's freshman harrier took a conservative approach against Arlington senior, and Middlesex League MVP for Cross Country, Evie Lauzon. This week, she was able show what she is capable of as she closed her final lap in a furious 34 seconds to best Lauzon and win in a time of 5:20.37. Whorton was back shortly thereafter in the 1000m where she took the race from wire-to-wire and crossed the line in 3:08.79. That time earned her a Division 1 qualifier in her second event of the season. Along with Whorton's strong double, junior Aubrey Deardorf turned in another solid day at the TRACK. The junior eased her way across the line in 7.42 seconds to win the 55m Dash, before picking up the win and five more points in the Long Jump with a leap of 17'3.75". Fellow classmate Felice Haverly also had a solid day, as she qualified for Divisionals in the 300m with a winning time of 43.16 seconds.
