BOSTON, MA - Rivalries have a way of bringing out the best in teams. The anxiety of the build up, the excitement in the atmosphere, and the crowd knowing what's at stake all make meets like Lexington v. Woburn, just different. On Friday The Minutemen and the Tanners, who have lorded over the Middlesex League for beyond a decade, dueled in Boston. LHS's boys and girls fell to Woburn last spring. The Tanners walked into Lexington and bested the boys in their dual meet, while the Lex girls came up short at the Middlesex League Championships. However, while Wednesday's meet was set to be a battle, it quickly turned into a rout. LHS's girls were buoyed by their strong middle and long distance squads and got key contributions from the speed and power athletes to take down the Tanners by a score of 69-31. Meanwhile the boys won 11 of 12 events on their way to a 71-25 victory.
The meet went as expected in the Hurdles, as Woburn superstar Nicole Gangi led a one-two finish for the Tanners in the 55m Hurdles. However, Cythina Gu (9.68) was able to pickup an important point with a third place finish. Junior Aubrey Deardorf (7.56) won the 55m Dash, while fellow classmate Bruguers Sagues (7.87) came through with the first point-swing of the day as she picked up a one with her third place finish. In the Shot Put ring, Ella Wolosoff deliver a massive performance. The junior came to Boston University with a season best of just over 25-feet, which was well behind Woburn's top girl. However, on her first throw of the competition, implementing her newly developed "Wolosoff Whirl" technique, Wolo dropped a nearly two-foot season best of 27'4.75". Along with fellow classmate Ainsley Cuthbertson's 30'7.25" opening round throw, the pressure was firmly on Woburn to respond, and they simple could not. The golden wall that LHS's Bomb Squad built, held through the next two rounds for a one-two finish and eight key points. Back on the track, in the Mile, sophomore Callie Glenn and freshman Ameila Whorton were locked in a battle with Woburn star Sinead Butler. Whorton went out to an early lead to keep the pace honest, but it was Glenn who made the move to string out the field in the middle of the race. As the race came down to the final 400m, the strong pace had Glenn, Whorton, and Butler lapping many runners in the field. As the trio came around a runner from Watertown, Butler got tangled up and went down to the track. While she got quickly got up, she was unable to recover as Glenn (5:16.04) won the race with Whorton (5:18.34) just behind. After the Mile, The Minutemen had the momentum, after the 600m, they were in control as the freshmen trio of Mackenzie Callahan (1:43.29), C.C. Kvaal (1:44.22), Addie Haiar (1:46.85), and senior captain Claire Cunningham's (1:45.96) third place finish busted out the platinum broom to sweep the top four places with four Divisional qualifying performances. Whorton (3:07.96) and Glenn (3:09.65) were back to go one-two in the 1000m, and from there the Lex girls were able to pull away. Freshman Janie Conrad (11:25.37), and sophomores Erin Ehmann (12:13.15) and Josie Bettencourt (12:42.51) broke out the golden broom to sweep the 2 Mile - all three hit the Divisional mark - and put a stamp on a tremendous night for Lexington.
After the team victory had been secured for The Minutemen, Cuthbertson was back in the throwing cage for the Weight Throw. The junior turned in a pair of solid throws in the first two rounds, but it was her third round where the fireworks came. Cuthbertson launched the 20-pound implement 45'2", which not only was a foot farther than her own school record, but that mark made her the first LHS athlete to punch her ticket to the New Balance Indoor Nationals this season. Just for good measure, Cuthbertson's fourth round throw improved that mark by one-inch, and with that she now ranks US #27 in her signature indoor event.
Junior captain Simon Tandeih led the way for The Minutemen on the boys' side. He began his day with a win in the 55m Hurdles in a time of 7.89 seconds. He then turned in a season best leap of 20'2.25" on his first attempt of the Long Jump. That mark held up through the rounds to earn him his second victory of the day. Tandeih capped off his strong day with a 23.1 split on the anchor leg of the 4x200m Relay. Along with senior Tim George, freshman Bennett Siino, and sophomore Luis Linares Gutierrez the team won going away with a time of 1:34.42. Another big day was turned in by Trevor Stevens. In the Mile, he navigated a physical start and a moderately paced opening quarter mile before going to the front and driving the race. As the field strung out, the sophomore harrier whittled the field down to three runners. In the end, Stevens finished just behind Reading's Tim Connolly for third overall, but he first in the Lexington v. Woburn matchup, with a new personal best of 4:34.27. Fellow classmate Owen Ross edged out Woburn's top runner to earn three points for his team, and, in doing so, broke the elusive 4:40 barrier for the first time in his career with a time of 4:39.08. Stevens was back in the 1000m shortly thereafter, where he ran a huge personal best of 2:41.15 to pick up a point behind senior Zach Barry's (2:38.54) winning run. The Shot Put went eerily similar for the boys as it did in the girls' event. Franz Schroeder came in with a season best of 41-feet. On his first throw he unleashed a bomb that flew 43'5.25". That again put the pressure on the competition, which made the difference in the event, as the LHS junior's throw held up through the rounds to earn victory. On the other end, junior Christian Brown waited until his final throw to drop a three-foot PR that landed at 42'0.25". That mark cemented another one-two finish for LHS's Bomb Squad.
