BOSTON, MA - After a handful meets where select Lexington High School athletes competed, on Tuesday, The Minutemen finally had their first opportunity to compete as a team. Over the course of four hours, LHS went up against the Belmont Marauders, and delivered a number of strong season opening performances on their way to a pair of dominating victories. The Minutemen won by a score of 70-30, while the Lex girls got the job done with a 75-25 win of their own.
The Minutemen were led by the strong efforts of their captain, senior Simon Tandeih. He began his day by cruising to victory in the 55m Hurdles with a time of 7.80 seconds. Later in the meet he picked up five more points for his team with a win in the Long Jump. His best leap took him out 20'1" into the pit. Along with Tandeih's big day, Cayden Chambers began his junior campaign in style. He won the 300m, and delivered a PR of 36.18 seconds, before anchoring the 4x200m Relay to victory with a 22.7 split. Over in the throwing area, LHS's Bomb Squad was well represented by senior Franz Schroeder. He won the Shot Put with a throw of 45'4.25", but was even more impressive in the Weight Throw. Despite not having his best technical day, the LHS senior still managed to launch the 25-pound implement 58'6.75" out into the sector. With that mark, the Brown University commit now ranks US #15 in the event. And, while Schroeder's performance was impressive, there were even more fireworks in the event on Tuesday night.
Already the Massachusetts state record holder in the Hammer Throw, superstar senior Ainsley Cuthbertson has been inching closer and closer to the state record in the 20lb. Weight Throw this season. That record, held by the reigning SEC Champion, and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, Kate Powers, has stood at 52'9" since 2022. On Tuesday, after Cuthbertson opened with a 49-foot throw on her first attempt, the still uncommitted senior dropped a bomb far out into the sector. After a pause for a measurement, the official called out the mark of 53'3.50" (16.24m) that sent Cuthbertson, as well as her teammates and coaches into a frenzy. The LHS senior would go on to put four more throws out over the 50-foot mark, with another throw landing beyond the Powers' old record, in what was a historic performance by all measures. Back on the track, fans saw the debut of a pair of LHS freshman who appear poised to make their marks on the team this season. Spectators would have never known it was Abby Kohut's first time competing at the high school level after watching her in the 55m Hurdles. When the gun fired, she blasted out of the blocks, and cleared the five barriers with ease on her way to victory in a Middlesex League Championship qualifying time of 9.36 seconds. Kohut was back at the end of the meet to seal the win in the 4x200m Relay, as she anchored the team with a 27.3 split. Along with Kohut's big debut, fellow classmate Zara Zaidi delivered a pair of victories as well. After laying back early on in the 600m, Zaidi unleashed a wicked kick to the finish over the final 150m of the race to win in a time of 1:51.08. On the 4x400m Relay, she was equally impressive as she led off the race with a 65.2 split, which helped her team earn the victory there as well.
