BOSTON, MA - This year's MSTCA Coaches Invitational returned to the the all-state format it utilized over a decade ago. That meant the meet was once again an opportunity for the best athletes in Massachusetts to experience a preview of the Meet of Champions in the month of January. With the championship season right around the corner, The Minutemen sent a handful of athletes looking to see how they measured up against the top prep talent in the state.
LHS's Bomb Squad has experienced a banner season in program history with the success of superstar senior Ainsley Cuthbertson. However, after his performance on Saturday morning, fellow classmate Franz Schroeder showed that he too will be a force to be reckoned with in February. The LHS senior competed in a loaded shot put field that featured the top 8 throwers in Massachusetts, all with PRs over 52 feet. While Schroeder has struggled with the shot this season, he appeared locked in during warm-ups, and delivered a season best (47'5.25") of over 3 feet on his opening attempt of the competition. He improved that mark another foot on his second throw, before his final throw of the prelims landed at 50'0.25". That marked the first time Schroeder had broken the elusive 50-foot barrier in his career. After delivering the best throw to that point of the competition in the unseeded flight, Schroeder then played the waiting game to see if his mark would earn him a spot in the 9 man final. Sure enough, it did just that. In an electric final that saw Hopedale's Ari Levine best Oliver Ames's Mitchell Callendar by a half-inch, with a final throw of 62'3.50", LHS's senior got a mark of 51'6.25" that placed him 7th overall. Back on the oval, sophomore Natalie Bielat had the standout performance for the Lex girls. Bielat competed in the seeded section of the 1000m, where she entered the day seeded 12th, the final entrant in the top section, with a personal best of 3:08.61. Sometimes all athletes need is the opportunity to rise to the occasion, and being the last person in a section can often be the boost that leads to breakout performances. That was the case for Bielat on Saturday. While Wakefield's Quin Wilcox (2:59.95) ran away from the heat, the LHS sophomore hung in with the chase pack, and cruised through the 800m mark in 2:26. She battled through the final lap to hang on for a 6th place finish with a new personal best of 3:03.09.
