LEX GIRLS EARN A HISTORIC VICTORY AT RELAYS; BOYS GUT OUT 3rd PLACE FINISH

Meet Information
MSTCA Division 1 Relays
January 18, 2026

Reggie Lewis Center - Boston, MA

RESULTS

BOSTON, MA - There must of been something in the thick air of the Reggie Lewis Center on Sunday afternoon. The fifth of five state relay meets held over the weekend, the MSTCA Division 1 Relays was the first real opportunity of the winter season for The Minutemen to show the teams they will see at the Divisional Championship what they are capable of. For the Lex girls, it was one of the most dominating performances in the meet's long and storied history. Lexington won 5 of 10 events, scored in each of them, and placed multiple relays in the top-8 in 3 different events on their way to a whopping 95 points. To put into perspective how impressive that score really was, a team is awarded 10 points for a 1st place finish, and 8 points for a 2nd place finish. Which meant the girls averaged better than a tie for first place... in all 10 events! While the girls were historically good, LHS's boys made history on their own. The long jump relay obliterated the previous all-state record in the event by over 2 feet. Their performance was the highlight of the meet, which saw The Minutemen finish tied for 3rd place overall with 36 points, despite not competing in 3 events on the afternoon. St John's Prep won the title with 68 points of their own.

The Lex girls got off to a perfect start in the first event of the meet. Junior Emily Hoefkens, freshman Abbey Kohut, sophomore Cynthia Gu, and senior Monjola Finnih won the 50 yard shuttle hurdles with a school record and national qualifying time of 29.45 seconds. Their performance broke the previous record set back in 2024, by team that included Hoefkens, along with LHS class of 2024 alums, Katie Atkins, Jada Solomon, and Amandine Mangon. From there, the middle and long distance athletes quickly turned the meet into a runaway. In the 4x800m relay, LHS's A-team of junior Callie Glenn (2:22.2), along with sophomores Natalie Bielat (2:23.2), Ceci Kvaal (2:21.6), and Mackenzie Callahan (2:23.0) cruised their way to victory with a national qualifying performance of 9:30.39. Meanwhile, LHS's B-team also achieved the standard for New Balance Nationals as sophomore Ella Tyson (2:24.8), junior Alycia Charest (2:31.5), sophomore Janie Conrad (2:24.3), and junior Erin Ehmann (2:21.0) ran 9:41.85 to place 4th overall. After that, it was the sprint medley relay's turn, and they did not disappoint. The team of junior Marissa Hao, sophomore Natalie Seed, and freshman Zara Zaidi did their job to keep the team in the mix going onto the 800m anchor leg where sophomore Amelia Whorton was waiting. LHS's superstar sophomore made quick work of a talented group of 800m runners, as she walked down the four teams ahead of her in the first lap, and poured it on over the next three to the tune of a 2:12.7 split. In the end, the team broke the tape with another national qualifying performance of 4:09.86.

Over in the shot put circle, the Lex girls hoped to pick up some big points with their trio of sophomores Adeline Bordok and Hazel Pryce Lewis, along with the nation's top-ranked weight thrower, senior captain Ainsley Cuthbertson. However, with the girls from Lowell boasting three throwers with PRs over 32-feet, it looked unlikely that the Lex girls would be able to get the win. After two lackluster rounds for the LHS relay, Bordok (24'9.75") delivered her best mark on her final attempt. Pryce Lewis followed suit with her best throw of the competition, 26'4.50". Then it was Cuthbertson's turn to finish things off for her teammates. Sure enough, she delivered in the way only the great ones can. With a personal best throw of over a foot, the LHS senior delivered mark of 42'8.75". That throw was nearly 10-feet farther than any of her competitors on the day, and rocketed her team up to the top of the leaderboard with a total distance of 93'10.75". After seeing that performance in the first of four flights, none of the other teams were able to match LHS's might, and they went on to win by over 3 feet.

Back on the oval, the Lex girls once again had two teams on the line. This time it was in the distance medley relay. After LHS's A and B teams scored 15 points in  4x8, the DMR proved to be sheer perfection. Glenn (A-team) and Conrad (B-team) handed off with nearly identical 1200m splits of 3:53, which gave the teams a large lead on the field. The teams stayed close throughout the 400m leg where Hao (A-team) and sophomore Addie Haiar (B-team) delivered splits of 62.9, and 63.8 respectively. Bielat got the stick for the A-team's 800m leg, and pulled away from the B-team with her second 2:23 split of the day. Ehmann's 2:27.9 split had the B-team still firmly in second position, as they lapped most of the field. Whorton cruised her way through the 1600m leg with a 5:09.7 split, which gave the A-team a convincing victory in a national qualifying time of 12:30.11. Meanwhile, it was Tyson (5:16.1) who brought the B-team home nearly 20 seconds ahead of third place with a runner-up time of 12:41.38. With that, the Lex girls who competed in those 5 events accounted for enough points (63) to secure the team title. However, there were plenty more big performances that finished the job for Lexington's girls.

While the totality of the Lex girls' performance cannot be understated, the loudest roar of the night from the Lexington section came during the unprecedented performance turned in by the long jump relay of Simon Tandeih, Luis Linares Gutierrez, and Cleavon Manor Jr. Things were off to a great start for The Minutemen as their captain, Tandeih, opened up with a leap of 21'3.25" to the excitement of his teammates. Known as "The Frog Man," Manor Jr, then turned in a season best leap of 20'8" that gave the team belief that something special could happen. However, in order for that to occur, Linares Gutierrez would need to delivere on the potential he showed all season. That delivery came on his second attempt of the competition, where he flew out over two-and-a-half feet farther than his lifetime best, and landed at 21'6". At that point, The Minutemen had already shattered the LHS record set just last year by over 4 feet. But, there was still one round to go. Simon Tandeih has long been the team's tone setter, a team captain since his sophomore year, he always delivers in the biggest moment, and did so again Sunday. The captain held the field house at attention as he thundered down the runway to the sound of a slow clap, and exploded off the board to a new lifetime best of 23'1.75". Next up in the jumping order was The Frog Man who road the slow clap to a new PR of 21'7.50" that sent the Lexington section into a frenzy. After back-to-back incredible jumps, Linares Gutierrez had the final say for The Minutemen. LHS's junior jumper followed the lead of his senior teammates, and called for the clap for his last attempt. When he landed deep out into the pit, everyone watching knew another massive mark was delivered. However, due to technical difficulties, the mark did not appear on the FieldLynx board. After minutes passed, the mark was finally revealed by the official to be an incredible 22'0.25" (6.71m). When the dust settled, the combined distance of 66'9.25", delivered on 3 consecutive jumps, will long be remembered as one of the finest performances in Massachusetts high school track & field history. Along with the all-time performance by the long jumpers, the other victory for The Minutemen was earned in the 50y shuttle hurdles. Tandeih gave the his teammates the lead on the opening leg, as he cleared the 3 barriers just ahead of Brockton's Jared Mighty, who holds the fastest time in Massachusetts this winter. Freshman Nick Perroud, and senior captain Aidan Raney delivered a pair of very strong performances to keep the team in it going into the anchor leg where senior Panos Kokkinias was prepared to strike. Kokkinias blasted out of his four-point stance just behind the team from St John's Prep, and slowly reeled them in. With a lean at the line he secured the win by just five hundredths-of-a-second. The team's final time of 25.39 seconds broke the LHS record that was set back in 2024 by a relay with Tandeih, Raney, Ryan Zhang (LHS '25), and Jacob Pan (LHS '24).

Throughout the meet, Prep established themselves as the clear class of the field, as they scored in each of the 10 events. However, despite not having its full compliment of athletes in its arsenal, The Minutemen battled throughout the meet to put themselves in a position to finish on the podium. As the meet came down to the final event, the 4x400m relay, it was a 3-team race for 2nd and 3rd place between Lexington, Lowell, and Central Catholic. The Minutemen came into the 4x4 with a season best of just 3:42, which had them in the third of five sections. Despite this, they put on a tremendous performance, capped off by a 51.8-second split by Cayden Chambers. LHS's junior led his relay, made up of sophomore Bennett Siino, junior Sheryas Hanchinamani, and junior Eli Selsky to a final time of 3:34.26. From there, the waiting game began, as they were 2 points ahead of Lowell, and tied with Central Catholic for 2nd place in the team competition. Lowell bested LHS's time in the next section, but Central Catholic failed to do so, which meant that the hopes of the three teams rested on the result of the seeded section. In the end, Lowell's time held up to earn 3rd place and 6 points. LHS finished 5th with 4 points. Meanwhile, Central Catholic held on to 8th place, which gave them the outright runner-up finish in the team scoring. The Minutemen settled for a hard fought tie for third place with Lowell after a tremendous effort by the team throughout the evening.
