BOSTON, MA - After Sunday saw The Minutemen's varsity squad put on a show at the Division 1 Relays, Monday morning, Lexington's junior varsity athletes took center stage. The JV League Championship was the final opportunity for those competitors to toe the line, and try to extend their season with qualifying marks for the varsity championship season. More important than the individual goals, a team title was also on the line at JV League, and The Minutemen were able to secure those in convincing fashioned. LHS's boys won with 152 points, as Winchester was 2nd with 64. Meanwhile the Lex girls turned in 161 points to best 2nd place Melrose (74.50) by a wide margin.
The Minutemen were great across the board on Monday, but perhaps the highlight of the meet came in an event that was not even scored. With the support of the Boosters of Lexington Track-XC, the LHS team was able to purchase a collapsible pole vault runway this winter. That meant the team has been able to develop its vault squad during the Indoor season, while the rest of Massachusetts either waits until spring, or asks athletes to pay for private coaches for training. Monday, a handful of the team's new vaulters got their chance to compete for the first time. Freshman William Webster was clean over every height up to 8'0". After a miss at 8'6", he rallied himself, and nailed his next attempt at the height. When the bar was moved to 9'0", a contingent of his coaches, and teammates crowded around the pit to see if the freshman could make it happen on his final jump. Sure enough, Webster delivered. He rode the pole up, slid over the bar, and while it was wobbling, it stayed on the standards for a good clearance at the height to secure the win. Along with the big day for the freshman, sophomore Zach Gerfen (8'0"), and junior Isaac Jeggo (7'6") also got their first marks in for the vault, as the pair placed 3rd and 4th respectively. Another big highlight of the day came in the mile where freshman Kiran Green had a major breakout performance. Green struggled through the early part of the season, but began to show glimpses of the promise he showed during cross country over the last couple meet. Monday, he stuck himself in with the lead pack, managed to run 4:42.04, and placed third overall. That time also earned him a spot at the varsity League Championship in February. Not to be overlooked, senior Colin Ryan also punch his ticket the League Meet, as he finished just behind Green in 4:43.00 to place 4th place overall. Finally, the 1000m was the event where Lexington's JV athletes scored the most points on the day. Junior Finn O'Donnell went to the front from the gun, and did his best to hold onto the pace he needed to make the varsity League standard of 2:44.50. In the end, he won the race, and earned 10 points for his team. However, his time of 2:44.54 left him just four hundredths-of-a-second shy of the mark he was chasing. Behind O'Donnell, sophomore Jacob Cho (2:47.65) turned in a massive personal best to earn silver. Junior Gabriel Ostrower placed 4th with a time of 2:55.10, and freshman Kian Khani (3:03.75) picked up a point with an 8th place finish of his own.
In the girls' meet, junior Alyssa McKee showed a flash of the ability that got her to the New Balance Nationals' freshman division of the 60m dash two years ago. McKee struggled with injuries and inconsistencies during her sophomore campaign, and the early part of this season was more of the same. However, on Monday she showed up ready to compete, and was back to her old ways. The junior cruised her way to the fastest time she's run in the 55m dash since freshman year in the prelims, as she crossed the line in 7.94 seconds. Then, in the finals, she turned it up another notch. McKee ran 7.89 seconds to take the win in convincing fashion. As was the case in the boys' meet, the mile saw a big breakout performance. This time it was from sophomore Isabella Gorospe. She came into the TRACK with a personal best of 5:47, which was within striking distance of the varsity League qualifier of 5:41.33. However, it was going to take guts to race the eight laps the way she needed to in order to make the mark. After coming through the halfway mark in 2:50, things were set up for the LHS sophomore, but she began to fade over the next three laps. When the bell rang for the final lap, Gorospe dug deep, and found the gear she needed to bring herself home with a winning time of 5:40.29. In the 600m, sophomore Sarojini Nath - who also won the pole vault with a jump of 6'6" - led the way for the Lex girls. She won the race with a time of 1:52.51. Right behind her, junior Allie Galloway delivered a strong race to earn silver with a time of 1:53.60. Senior Sophie Kuo, who battled injuries throughout much of her career, competed in the unseeded section of the event. Despite this, Kuo ran her first PR since her freshman year, 1:55.66, which held up to place 4th overall.
