The Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory - New York, NY
RESULTS
NEW YORK, NY - Wednesday, superstar sophomore Amelia Whorton traveled to New York City to compete at The Armory. The legendary facility has been one of the world's premier indoor track & field centers for decades, it has been the host to dozens of youth, high school, collegiate, and world records over the years. For Whorton, the Millrose Games Trails offered her a chance to compete against a talented field of milers all vying for an automatic bid to compete in the national high school invitational race at the 118th Millrose Games in February.
When the gun fired, Whorton charged right out with top pack, and was sat comfortably on the shoulder of the leader as they came around the first lap. After a solid opening quarter mile of 73 seconds, the field slowed, and bunched up. Whorton remained calm as her competitors closed in on her, and did her best to maneuver through the traffic while staying up at the front. Senior Zaria Hall of East Meadow (NY) took the field through the halfway point in 2:29, and continued to hold on to the lead as the race approached the final two laps. Down the backstretch with just over 300m to go, Whorton still found herself just behind the leaders in fourth place. However, the race favorite - Scarsdale (NY) sophomore Adriana Pettinelli - made a move up to push Hall at the bell, and went on to unleash a 31 second final 200m to win the race in 4:53.98. Hall was second in 4:54.30. Meanwhile, Whorton (4:58.70) managed to close with a 35 second final lap, and moved grabbed third place overall, as she was able to hold off the late run from Wall (NJ) junior Cali Buxbaum by one-tenth-of-a-second. Whorton's time is the best by any Bay State female so far this winter, and ranks US #13 as the season approaches its midway point.
