BOSTON, MA - On Sunday, senior captain Simon Tandeih, and fellow classmate Monjola Finnih competed in the boys' and girls' pentathlons. The event features athletes competing in five events (55m hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump, and the girls 800m or boys 1000m) with just 30 minutes separating each discipline. The pentathlon is a true test of physical and mental toughness, as athletes must get themselves geared up and cooled down after each event, regardless of how well... or poorly their performance went.
Tandeih, the defending state champion in the event, entered Saturday's competition with a personal best of 3396 points, and had high hopes of hitting the New Balance Indoor Nationals' standard of 3500 points. Unfortunately, after a solid start to his day, where he ran 7.80 seconds in the hurdles to score 902 points, he fouled out of the shot put. With that, he earned 0 points, and needed to find a way to soldier on in the remaining three events. Despite the major disappointment, Tandeih rallied himself to turn in season bests in the long jump (21'7"), and high jump (5'9.75"). And, with his time of 3:11.48, the LHS senior still managed a total of 2774 points, which landed him in 11th place overall.
In the girls' pentathlon, Finnih also began her day with a personal best in the hurdles. She placed sixth overall with a time of 9.74 seconds in the event. Finnih followed that up with a throw of 22'10.75" in the shot put, which was seventh best in the field. She then cleared 4'2" in the high jump, before she made a mark of 14'5.25" in the long jump. Finnih struggled through the 800m, but hung tough to run 3:27.60. In the end, Finnih's point total of 1904 was enough for 14th place.
