RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - Saturday, a handful of Lexington High School athletes traveled to the Reggie Lewis Center for the 38th Annual New England Championships. The is the culmination of the high school indoor season for the six New England states, as each have the opportunity to send their top six finishers from the various all-state championships to compete against each other for bragging rights. While most of LHS's squad decided to forgo the meet, as they prepare for New Balance Indoor Nationals, the ones that competed on Saturday brought their A games.
Franz Schroeder has made a career out of dropping a bomb in the early rounds of the throwing events, and putting the pressure on his opponents. The LHS senior followed that script to the letter at New Englands, as his first attempt in the boys shot put flew to a personal best mark of 52'11.50". Seeded 11th, his performance held on for a ninth place finish in the event. Over on the oval, the girls 4x200m relay of sophomore Sabina Green, freshman Abbey Kohut, as well as seniors Julianna Mathurin and Felice Haverly looked to build on the season best performance that earned them fifth place at last week's MIAA Meet of Champions. With the top three schools in Massachusetts not in attendance at Reggie Lewis, the Lex girls also had a great chance to finish near the top of the field. Running in the seventh of nine sections, LHS delivered a season best of 1:45.04, which placed eighth overall. That performance also earned the crew a spot at Nationals in two weeks. To add context to that achievement, and the achievements of the entire Lex girls' team, of the 14 events the MIAA sanctions for indoor track & field, the LHS girls have delivered national qualifying performances in a whopping 11 of them.
One of four Lex girls who has qualified for Nationals in multiple individual events, senior captain Ainsley Cuthbertson finished off the day The Minutemen, as she competed in the shot put. Cuthbertson was not at her best at the Meet of Champions last week, and had to settle for bronze. Things did not look good for Cuthbertson again in the prelims, as LHS's superstar was in seventh place entering the finals with a best mark of 38'0.50". However, on her first throw of finals she put the 4kg ball 40'9" into the sector to move up to second place behind North Kingstown (RI) junior Tayla Schneider. In the final round, Cuthbertson dug deep, and exploded through the circle with a throw that landed at 41'4". That mark held her runner-up finish, and sealed her the silver medal.
Up Next
Freshman Kiran Green will head back to Reggie Lewis tomorrow, March 1st for the USATF-NE Youth Indoor Championships, where he will compete in the mile. Action begins at 1pm.
