RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - Lexington returned to the TRACK at New Balance on Monday morning for their annual winter break dual meet. For years this meet has been a struggle for LHS, and other teams, as many athletes are away during vacation, and thus unable to compete. While The Minutemen were definitely limited, those who toed the line on Monday performed well, and helped their team roll to a pair of wins over Winchester. LHS's boys won by a score of 62-28. Meanwhile, the Lex girls also moved to 3-0 with a 78-22 victory of their own.
Monday's meet against the Red and Black saw the return of The Minutemen's distance grinder, junior Trevor Stevens. A captain on the cross country team, Stevens' passion for the sport is unrivaled. That came through as he went to work in the mile. He ran a conservative opening quarter mile before dropping the hammer over the middle portion of the race. Stevens blew away the field, and crossed the line with a winning time of 4:38.25. Not too long after, the LHS junior was back on the line for the 1000m, where he got his second win of the day with a time of 2:46.05. Another athlete who had a big day for Lexington was sophomore Yash Sankholkar. He began his day with a huge personal best in the 55m hurdles, as he dropped his PR by nearly a half-second with a time of 8.99 seconds. His performance earned his team one point as he finished third overall. After the hurdles, Sankholkar walked onto the high jump apron as The Minutemen's lone competitor in the event. There, he failed to clear opening height on his first two attempts, but made it over 5'2" on his final jump. On his second attempt at 5'4", Sankholkar cleared the bar again, which moved him past Winchester's Jasper Carswell, who took three jumps to make the height. That clearance sealed three more points for LHS, as Sankholkar finished second.
Just as was the case in the boys' meet, the girls' meet saw the season debut of key contributors from the cross country team. Juniors Alycia Charest and Erin Ehmann cruised their way to a one-two finish in the mile. Ehmann took the victory in 5:38.18, while Charest was strides behind in 5:39.80. The script was flipped in the 2 mile, as Charest took the win with a time of 12:09.93, and Ehmann (12:31.29) was second. Monday's meet also saw the return of Amelia Whorton. LHS's superstar sophomore competed in the 1000m, where she became Lexington's second New Balance Nationals qualifier of the season, as she won the race with a time of 2:58.01. Speaking of national qualifiers, senior captain Ainsley Cuthbertson capped off an incredible December in the weight throw. On her second throw of the competition, Cuthbertson unleashed the 20-pound implement 56'3.75" (17.16m). That mark reclaimed the US #3 spot in the national rankings, and was her 7th PR in 7 meets this month, as she has improved by over 7 feet in the last 4 weeks. After working through a minor injury at the start of the season, sophomore Cynthia Gu returned to competition against Winchester, and made an immediate impact. Gu finished second in the 55m hurdles with a Middlesex League Championship qualifying time of 9.24 seconds.

The Minutemen will travel to arguably the fastest track in the country next Monday, January 5th, as they face off against Arlington at the Boston University Indoor Track & Tennis Center. The Spy Ponders' boys' team bested LHS last winter in a meet that came down to the 4x4, and for the first time this year have moved up Division 1 at the MIAA level. The setting should be right for a classical dual on Monday evening.
