THE CANDYMAN PRODUCES ONE FINAL LHS RECORD, PLACES 17TH AT NATIONALS
Meet Information
New Balance Outdoor Nationals Day 1
June 13, 2024
Franklin Field - Philadelphia, PA
RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA, PA - On Thursday, The Minutemen were back historic Franklin Field for the first time since last year's New Balance Outdoor Nationals. On that Sunday in June of 2023, the 4x400m Relay of LHS '23 greats Alexios Kontothanassis, Jake Wheaton, and Branndon Uda-Thach paired with then-junior McKenna O'Hare Gibson to take down the school record in the event. Day 1 of this year's Nationals proved to be same story different chapter, as senior captain Joey "The Candyman" Ryan competed in the 5000m. The LHS record holder in both the Indoor and Outdoor 2 Mile made his track debut over the 3.1-mile distance, and turned in a strong effort throughout the 12 and-a-half laps of the Franklin Field oval. From the unseeded section, Ryan battled his way up through the field in the middle of the race and crossed the line in 15:11.77. That time would hold up to earn him 17th overall, and established a new LHS record in the event. The Candyman will anchor the Sprint Medley Relay tomorrow, but Thursday marked the final time he raced as an individual for The Minutemen. A student-athlete who barely dipped under the 5-minute mile mark his freshman year, Ryan built a career that is a shinning example of how hard work and dedication pays off. With his career all but over, it is safe to say that the Holy Cross commit is hands down one of the finest distance runners to ever come through the LHS program.
Up Next
The Minutemen are back for Day 2 tomorrow as a trio of boys will compete in the Freshman 2 Mile, followed by the SMR, before the Massachusetts state record holder in the 400m Hurdles, O'Hare Gibson, competes in his signature event. Action will get underway at 8:50am, and can be streamed live HERE.
