RESULTS
LEXINGTON, MA - The Minutemen welcomed the Arlington Spy Ponders to Lexington for their home opener on Wednesday. After a disappointing early season loss to Arlington's boys during the winter season, LHS's boys left no doubt this time around as they routed the Spy Ponders by a score of 104-32. On the girls' side, the meet ended up being much tighter than expected. In the end, Lexington prevailed by a score of 72-60.
Perhaps the highlight of the meet for Lexington's boys came from Sam Myerberg. Last year, as a sophomore, he burst onto the scene to become the best javelin thrower the team produced in years. On Wednesday, he got right back to it. His first throw of the season flew 144'11", a personal best for Myerberg. Then on his final throw of the competition, he launched the spear 151'6". That mark not only won the event and qualified him for the MIAA Division 1 Championships, but was the third farthest throw of the javelin in LHS history, behind only Myles Adley's (LHS '10) 163'3" and Conor Hill's (LHS '16) record mark of 163'8". Along with Myerberg's big day, captains Simon Tandeih and Amari Mow both delivered great marks in the Long Jump. Tandeih flew out to 22'9" to win the event, while Mow was right behind him with a 21'10" leap of his own. Both marks qualified the juniors for the Division 1 Championships. In the 800m, senior Max Zhang showed that he is in fine form in this early stage of the season. Going up again Arlington junior Nico Peukert, the two were stride-for-stride coming around the final turn. However, Zhang moved into the lead on the homestretch and managed to hold on to a dramatic win in a time of 1:59.40 that was another of the 12 Division 1 qualifying marks turned in by LHS's boys on Wednesday.
It is a testament to her talent that a school record and national qualifier is just another day at the track for this athlete, but that is exactly what went down yesterday as junior Aubrey Deardorf opened her season in style. With her first jump of the spring, she flew nearly 10 inches farther than her lifetime best in the Long Jump and, with her mark of 19'0", won the event by just under three feet. While the season is young, Deardorf's mark is the best jump in the Massachusetts by over a half foot. Along with Deardorf's big day, the Lex girls showed very well in the 400m Hurdles. The trio of freshmen Kashish Kumar (1:12.19) and Sarojini Nath (1:13.01), along with senior captain Caroline Kvaal (1:13.10) all hit the Divisional standard in the event. Another strong event for The Minutemen was the 2 Mile. During the Cross Country season, sophomore Alycia Charest and freshman Ella Tyson were key pieces for a team that finished runner-up at the Division 1 All-State Championships. The pair competed on other LHS teams during the winter, but proved they are back and ready to contribute at the state level this spring. Charest won the 2 Mile with a time of 12:03.24, while Tyson finished third overall in 12:13.49. Both athletes' marks qualified them for the Division 1 Championships.
