LEXINGTON, MA - For the first time in recent memory, Lexington played host to a major invitational meet. The 2025 Coaches Metro Invitational featured some of the top prep talent from all parts of the Bay State. Despite miserable conditions in the early morning, the teams that traveled from across Massachusetts were met with a tremendous atmosphere, fantastic competition, and sunny skies breaking just as the meet came to a close. As the host team, The Minutemen certainly benefitted from home field advantage as they took home the victory in seven events on day.
Sophomore Trevor Stevens got the morning off to a great start as he competed in the Boys 2 Mile. A true distance grinder, the LHS harrier kept the pace honest throughout the early part of the race. As the laps clicked off, Stevens wore the field down until it was just him running against the clock as he approached the bell. In the end, Stevens barreled down the homestretch, to the roar of his teammates huddled under their tents along the fence to stay dry, and with a new personal best of 9:39.61 he took home gold. In the Mile, senior Max Zhang and sophomore Patrick Noonan were at the front early on with Winchester senior Nicholas Walker. The trio were right together as they approached the bell, and as they came down the backstretch Zhang and Noonan made a big move to overtake Walker. Around the curve Zhang found another gear and powered his way to victory in a new personal best time of 4:24.62. Zhang's final lap of 63.7 was simply too much for Noonan, who still delivered his best time of the season as he earned silver with a time of 4:28.18. Junior captain Amari Mow has spent much of his spring focusing on developing his talents in the horizontal jumps. However, on Saturday he showed that he has plenty of firepower to sprint at a high level. In weather that haunts sprinters, rain and cold, Mow qualified first out of the 100m prelims with a time of 11.03 seconds. Then, in the finals, Mow exploded out of the blocks and smoothly transitioned through his drive phase into his top gear. The LHS junior won the race by daylight with a new personal best and MA #9 time of 10.93 seconds. That performance put Mow in extremely elite company, as he is only third Lexington sprinter to break the elusive 11-second barrier in the last 30 years. The Minutemen's final victory on the boys' side came in the Boys 4x800m Relay. The Indoor school record team of senior James Joseph, sophomore Arjun Raha, Zhang, and senior Zach Barry all double back after their open events. With a pair of 2-flat splits by Zhang and Barry to close out the race, the team won in a season best time of 8:14.51. The final big performance of the day came from senior Ryan Zhang. While Zhang had to settle for silver in the 110m Hurdles, he was simply sensational as he broke the LHS record just set by his teammate and training partner, junior captain Simon Tandeih, with a run of 14.52 seconds.
For the Lex girls, the story of the day was the continued dominance by junior Ainsley Cuthbertson across her three throwing events. The wet conditions seemed to be affecting her early in the Discus as she was in the unfamiliar position of being in second place in the finals. However, she retook the lead with a throw of 117'0" in the fifth round, and delivered a throw of 121'9" to make it an emphatic victory by 6-feet. Next up was the Shot Put. In her final throw of prelims, Cuthbertson dropped a bomb 39'1.75" into the sector. That mark won the event by a wide margin, as the LHS junior produced the 4 farthest throws of the competition. The final event to finish on the day was the Hammer Throw. Cuthbertson's first throw soared 149'5", which won the event by over 20-feet. With her triple gold performance, Cuthbertson earned the MSTCA's Athlete of the Meet Award. Back on the track, freshman Amelia Whorton competed in just her second meet of the season as she locked up with Newton North senior Ciara Evans. Despite being two of the best milers in the Bay State indoors, they never got the chance to square off in the winter. So, Saturday's race had plenty of build up and delivered all the excitement of big time middle distance racing. Whorton was out front early, and, along with Evans, had gapped the field by about 10 meters as the pair came through the halfway point at 2:34. As the two approached the bell, Evans, who had been sitting on Whorton's shoulder every step of the way, made her move and surged into the lead. Whorton gave a late run down the homestretch to try and reel Evans in, but it was too late as Evans took the victory in 5:00.36. The LHS freshman finished with the silver medal in a time of 5:03.93. Not to be overlooked, LHS's sprint squad delivered a pair of big performances on the girls' side. Junior Aubrey Deardorf ran a time of 12.80 seconds to earn silver in the 100m. Fellow classmate Felice Haverly managed a silver medal of her own, as she crossed the line in 26.08 seconds in the 200m.
