EASTON, MA - This spring's Freshman / Sophomore Meet was all about the speed and power athletes of Lexington. While the middle and long distance runners were resting up for the gauntlet of meets The Minutemen will face in the coming weeks, the sprinters, jumpers, hurdles, and throwers were out in full force. The meet saw LHS athletes deliver great performances across all events, but a handful of underclassmen showed that The Minutemen will continue to be a force for years to come.
The Discus is a technical event, traditionally dominated by athletes with years of experience to develop their skills. In fact, of the top 25 throws in the Bay State this season, all but one of them have come from juniors and seniors. Freshman Evelyn Radcliffe added another underclassman to that list on Saturday. Radcliffe entered the meet with a personal best of 98'6", but with her first throw of the competition, the ninth grader all but ended it. From a stand, Radcliffe launched the discus 103'4" out into the sector. For perspective, no other athlete came within 10 feet of that mark. With the title all but locked up, the freshman moved to a spin with the hope that she would catch a big one in her next five throws. Her third throw would land at 103'11" to extend her lead, and while her fifth and sixth round throws had the potential to be up there with the best in the state, neither landed within the sector lines. Regardless, it was an incredible day for Radcliffe as she walked away with the gold. On the track it was sophomore Cayden Chambers who is quickly becoming one to watch in the short sprints. Always an electric starter out of the blocks, Chambers began the day with a huge personal best of 22.60 seconds in the 200m. That mark qualified him for the MIAA Division 1 Championships and earned him the silver medal behind the time of 22.45 turned in by Abington's Naz Paulding. Later, Chambers found himself in the finals of his signature event, the 100m. Once again he was locked in a battle with Paulding, where he pushed him to the limit. In the end, the LHS sophomore delivered a tremendous performance to cross the line with another personal best of 11.01 seconds. That mark earned him the second silver of his day, though, as Paulding broke the meet record with a time of 10.91 seconds. However, Chambers did get his gold at the end of the meet as he led off LHS's 4x100m Relay that featured fellow classmates Sheryas Hanchinamani, Aaron Yu, and Luis Linares Gutierrez. Despite a rocky second exchange, The Minutemen held off the charge by O'Bryant by two-hundredths-of-a-second to win with a time of 44.76 seconds. Over on the Triple Jump runway, freshman Cynthia Gu took three massive leaps forward in the event. Despite entering the competition with a lifetime best of 33'8", the freshman turned in six consecutive jumps over 34 feet, with her best jump landing her 35'6.25" into the pit. That mark earned her the bronze medal, and now ranks her #3 in LHS history in just her first season competing in the event. Back on the track, Gu was one of just two freshman to qualify for the finals of the 100m Hurdles. Once there, she ran a personal best of 16.47 seconds to earn a sixth place finish, capping off a true breakout performance.
