Leary Field - Waltham, MA
RESULTS
WALTHAM, MA - After the Middlesex League Championship on Wednesday, a few members of the LHS Track & Field team still had hopes of punching their tickets to the MIAA Division 1 Championships next week. With both the boys and girls likely to compete for the titles, The Minutemen needed all the options available to them to secure the necessary points next week. Saturday's meet at Leary Field in Waltham, was quite literally their last chance to make it happen.
Things got off to a great start as junior captain Amari Mow competed in the Triple Jump. Mow, who is new to the event this year, came in with a PR of 40'1". He needed to make 40'7" on one of his four attempts to hit the qualifying standard. After two lackluster attempts, Mow finally got the jump done as he soared well over 43 feet into the pit to make his mark. With his final attempt was his best, as he landed at 43'7.50". With that, the LHS junior put himself up near the top-10 in Division 1 going into next week. On the oval it was senior Lucy Kontos who competed in the 800m. The senior missed over a year with injury, but has been quickly moved up the rankings in the Mile since making her season debut two weeks ago. Saturday, she went to Waltham to try and deliver in the 800m for the first time this year. A quick early pace might have cost her in the latter half of the race, however, Kontos still managed to run 2:24.35 and qualify for Divisionals in the event. The last event for The Minutemen in Waltham was the Javelin, where freshman Casey Wilkas competed. The 2024 Middle School State Champ in the Turbo Javelin only picked up the metal spear for the first time three weeks ago. Since then she had reached 80'2" in competition, but fell short of that mark at the League Championship on Wednesday. On Saturday, Wilkas was firing on all cylinders. With her first attempt, the freshman launched the spear 87'7" into the sector. Her second attempt, her best on the day, was event better as the javelin landed at 88'3". That mark ranks her #13 in Division 1 and will put her in a position to compete for points for her team next week.
