LHS'S BOMB SQUAD KICKS OFF THE OUTDOOR SEASON IN STYLE IN RHODE ISLAND

Meet Information
57th Annual R.I. Knights of Columbus Relays
April 5, 2025
Conley Stadium - Providence, RI
RESULTS
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Ocean State has long been one of the few in the U.S. that consistently produces some of the nation's finest prep Hammer throwers, and so LHS's Bomb Squad has held the date of this meet on the calendar in recent years as their spring season kickoff. The Annual Rhode Island Knights of Columbus Relays, which typically only features a 4xMile Relay and the Hammer Throw, serves as a showcase for what is generally the marginalized throwing event.
A unique feature of the Hammer is that while LHS athletes train all year, they only get to compete the event during the spring and summer. All that practice time in the fall and winter tend to lead to massive leaps forward when competition begins again each April. That was absolutely the case on Saturday, as LHS's best throwers both improved on their previous personal records by around 30 feet. Already the LHS record holder in the 4 kilogram Hammer with her sophomore year PR of 118'8", junior Ainsley Cuthbertson's second throw of the competition flew an incredible 144'10". That mark would hold up to place her 10th overall in a stacked field and achieved the New Balance Outdoor Nationals standard. However, Cuthbertson was just getting going. After the 4k Hammer competition wrapped up, the girls brought out the 3k hammers, which are the standard for the Under-18 Junior Olympics. With the slightly lighter implement, Cuthbertson was sensational! She launched the steel ball 154'1". That mark shattered the previous all-time Massachusetts record in the event set by Alexandra Strelnitskaya (East Longmeadow HS '15) by nearly 10-feet. Along with the big day for Cuthbertson, fellow classmate Franz Schroeder also took a massive leap forward with the hammer. Schroeder came in with a PR of 136'1" from last year, and quickly wiped that off the board as he dropped the 12-pound ball a whopping 170'1" out into the muddy sector. That throw earned the LHS junior a 10th place finish of his own.
