WHORTON PUTS HENNESSY TO THE TEST AT BAYSTATE RUNNING ELITE MEET
Meet Information
4th Annual BSR Elite Scholastic Meet
May 15, 2026
Cushing Field Complex at UMass Lowell - Lowell, MA
RESULTS
LOWELL, MA - On Friday night, Lexington's superstar sophomore, Amelia Whorton, was invited to toe the line in the seeded section of the Girls 800m at the BSR Elite Scholastic Meet. Hosted by Marathon Sports and New Balance, the meet brought together some of the best talent in New England in the 400m, 800m, and the mile. For Whorton, the meet provided the opportunity to square off against a loaded field, which included Westford Academy's Abigail Hennessy. Fresh off an Indoor season that saw her take down the state record in the mile, set all the way back in 1979 by Olympic bronze medalist and 1992 World Cross Country champion Lynn Jennings, the University of Washington commit has been nearly unbeatable this year at any distance. From the moment the gun fired, though, Whorton made it clear that she wasn't afraid to challenge anyone over the half mile.
The LHS sophomore burst off the line and came around the turn at the front of the pack, with only the pacer ahead of her. Whorton cruised through the opening 200m right around 30 seconds flat, and continued her strong pace onto the homestretch. As she approached the bell, Hennessy tried to move up into the lead. Whorton darted out from behind the pacer, and held off the charge by the Westford Academy senior, as she led the race through the halfway mark in 63.11 seconds. Whorton held on to the lead around the next turn. However, as all the great ones do, Hennessy had another gear in her, and made a strong move to pass Whorton down the backstretch. In the end, it was Hennessy's night, as she held off the late charge by Bedford (NH) senior Mikita Barry to win with a time of 2:07.15. While Whorton did not have it in her to take the win on Friday, she held on for a podium finish, as she crossed the line third with a new personal best of 2:09.28, which ranks her US #9 among sophomores.
