UNDERCLASSMEN MAKE THEIR PRESENCE KNOWN AT FROSH/SOPH MEET

Meet Information
MSTCA Jim Hoar School Freshman/Sophomore Meet
May 9, 2025
Woburn High School - Woburn, MA

RESULTS

WOBURN, MA - "Track Day," as the Lexington High School coaches referred to it, was supercharged this year. Normally the second Saturday in May sees The Minutemen compete in two separate meets. However, with a pair of Lex girls down in New York for the Loucks Games on Saturday morning, the MSTCA Freshman/Sophomore Meet was leg two of a three-meet day. "Frosh/Soph" turned out to be a sensational meet for LHS, as the team went to Woburn, and delivered a huge day across the board. After the meet wrapped, one thing was certain on the short bus ride home, the future for Lexington Track & field is just as bright as as the present.

In a day that featured elite level performances, the Frosh/Soph Meet proved to be a coming out party for sophomore Bennett Siino. He began his day in the 200m, where he locked horns with Acton-Boxborough's Taran Lerra. The two blasted out of the blocks and battled all the way to the line. With a perfectly timed lean, Siino grabbed victory by one-hundredth-of-a-second, with a new PR, and MA #10 time of 22.23 seconds. His day was just getting started, however. Siino squared off with Lerra later in the meet in the 400m. The event proved to be another battle. This time, Lerra got the best of Lexington's young sprinter. Despite settling for silver, though, Siino delivered a massive personal best time of 50.50 seconds, and qualified for the MIAA Division 1 Championship in the process. While Siino was blazing up the track, freshman Daniel Sun was dominating the discus. His first throw landed over eight feet farther than any of his competitors would throw all day. In the end, Daniel Sun, one of only two ninth graders in the top 10, won the event with a throw of 133'3". However, LHS's Bomb Squad's top underclassman was not done yet. Over in the shot put he took the bronze medal with a throw of 42'6.50". Freshman John Mathurin continued The Minutemen's strong day in the technical events, as he competed in the triple jump. A basketball player in the winter, Mathurin's inaugural season on the track has come with a steep learning curve. Despite this, over the last couple weeks things have began to click for the ninth grader in the more technical of the horizontal jumps. After a pair of 38-foot marks, on his third attempt, Mathurin exploded out to 40'7.75". That jump rocketed him up the leaderboard, eventually landing him in fourth place overall, and made him the only freshman in the top 12.

The star of the show for the Lex girls was the team's freshman phenom, Abbey Kohut. She began the day in the triple jump, where on her second attempt she flew out to 36'4". That incredible mark ranks her MA #12 among all triple jumpers, and earned her the silver medal behind Acton-Boxborough sophomore Danette Nabbosa (37'5.75"). As was the case for her male counterpart in the boys triple, Kohut was the only ninth grader in the top 10 of the event. However, Kohut was not the only one lighting things up for the Lex girls in the triple jump. Sophomore Sabina Green waited until her sixth and final jump of the day to deliver a 35'3" leap. That performance landed her in fourth place overall. Over on the track, LHS's freshman star ran a PR of 15.64 seconds to qualify second out of the prelims of the 100m hurdles. In the finals, she gave Tyngsborough's Savannah Johnson all she could handle with another personal best time of 15.58 seconds. In the end, though, she was on the wrong side of a race that came down to one-hundredth-of-a-second. Despite the loss, her silver medal winning performance moved her to #2 on LHS's all-time hurdle list. In her final event of the day, Kohut turned in one final medal-winning performance. With a leap of 16'10.75", she placed fourth overall in the long jump. After the hurdles were cleared from the track, Green loaded into the blocks for the finals of the 100m. The LHS sophomore burst out, and flew down the stretch to a time of 12.88 seconds. That mark was a new personal best, and earned her the silver medal in the event. Over on the javelin runway, sophomore Casey Wilkas appeared to find the form that made her a Divisional qualifier in the event last spring. Wilkas has spent this spring training for the multi-events, which has taken time away from honing her javelin skills. However, it all came together on Saturday in Woburn. Her first three throws were each season bests, and her first time over 80 feet this season. Her final throw of prelims landed at 86'5". After a pair of lackluster marks in the finals, her last attempt was flew past her PR, and landed at 90'0". That mark placed her fourth overall in the meet, and gave her the auto-qualifier for Divisionals.
