LEXINGTON, MA - Next weekend, the ultimate team prize in the sport of high school track & field in Massachusetts will be on the line in Westfield. The MIAA Division 1 Championship has been circled on The Minutemen's calendar since Lexington's girls and boys finished first and second respectively last spring, and both will be among the favorites to claim the title this year. With that backdrop, Saturday, a handful of athletes had one more opportunity to punch their tickets to Divisionals, as they competed at the Last Chance Meet.
Allie Galloway, who competed at this meet last spring, hoped for luck to be on her side this time around. Wild weather that saw bright sunshine turn to an epic downpour between throws last year, made it all but impossible to throw the discus. However, this year, the setting was perfect for the performance Galloway needed. After a foul on her first attempt, the LHS junior threw a personal best of 92'4" on her second. Then, on her third attempt she got the discus out to 95'1". That throw would end up as her best, and vaulted her up the Division 1 rankings to #21 (top-24 go to Divisionals). While Galloway got things going for Lexington, fellow classmate, Agnes Broderick, closed the meet for The Minutemen in style. Entering Saturday, Broderick was also on the outside looking in for Divisionals. However, things started to look up after she delivered a personal best throw of the javelin - 83'11" - on her second attempt. While her third throw was just shy of that mark, the format of the Last Chance meet played to her advantage on Saturday, as all throwers were given four attempts as opposed to the normal three. And so, Broderick had one final shot to improve her mark, and move up the rankings. Sure enough, she delivered. Her final throw of the 600g metal spear stuck in the ground right at 84'6". Broderick's performance in Waltham currently ranks #22 in Division 1, just three inches clear of the 24th and final qualifying spot to go to Westfield. There are still about 48 hours until the qualifying window for Divisionals closes, but as things sit, Galloway and Broderick are currently in position to compete next weekend.
