NORTH ANDOVER, MA - On Thursday, The Minutemen had 15 athletes make the trip up to Merrimack College to compete at Day 1 of the MIAA Meet of Champions. While the Division 1 Championship had all the drama and intrigue that came along with an epic battle for the team titles, the Meet of Champions is all about the individual. Athletes compete over two days to chase medals, PRs, and, for some, national qualifiers. LHS had a number of solid performances from their group on Thursday. However, what seniors Cleavon Manor Jr and Aubrey Deardorf did on the triple jump will be remembered for years to come.
Deardorf had a number of strong jumps during the prelims, but struggled to find the board during those opening three attempts. Despite this, LHS's senior captain was still able to get over 38-feet, and was fourth as she entered the finals. After another huge jump, from well behind the board, on her first attempt, Deardorf exploded out to 39'9". That mark not only broke the 30-year old school record in the event set by Hillary Donnellan (LHS '97) at the Junior Olympics the summer after her junior year, but also stamped her ticket to the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the event. However, there was still the matter of one last attempt for Deardorf. On that final jump, the Quinnipiac University commit pushed her newly minted record to another level, as she landed 40'1.25" into the sand. Her sensational performance earned the silver medal on Thursday, and was the 75th farthest jump that has been recorded anywhere in the US this spring.
Once the girls finished up, the boys took to the runway. After last week's meet ended in disaster for Manor Jr, he rallied himself to compete in the triple jump at the Meet of Champions. Unfortunately, Manor Jr's first two attempts were lackluster, and it looked like he would take an early exit from the event. However, on his final jump, "The Frog Man" leapt his way to the finals. The LHS senior delivered a new personal best of 46'7", which was by far the best mark in the unseeded flight, and qualified in sixth position for the finals. In those finals, he brought the fireworks. On his fifth round jump, Manor Jr found the jump he had searched for, for the last year, as he landed an incredible 47'5.75" into the sands of the Merrimack College pits. After the disappointment at last Sunday's Divisional Meet, and missing out on gold by just an inch-and-a-half in the triple jump two days prior, finally, the Frog Man came through in the biggest moment. His jump earned him the silver medal - only bested by Catholic Memorial's Amar Skeete, who broke a 35-year old meet record - by just three-quarters-of-an-inch, qualified him for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, and brought down the second LHS triple jump record that stood since the 1990s in less than an hour. While Johan Jack (LHS '94) still holds the 55m and 100m records in Lexington, after his performance on Thursday, the undisputed triple jump king at LHS is now Cleavon "The Frog Man" Manor Jr.
