NEW YORK, NY - Over the weekend The Minutemen sent a handful of athletes to the Empire State to compete in the 2026 edition of the New York Relays. The meet, which was held at Icahn Stadium, the site of this year's USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships, featured top prep from around the northeast and beyond. That competition seemed to bring out the best in Lexington's athletes as senior captain Ainsley Cuthbertson, sophomore Evelyn Radcliffe, and the Finch brothers had themselves a strong weekend.
Action began for Cuthbertson on Friday afternoon as she competed in the hammer throw. The LHS senior squared off against a trio of girls from IMG Academy, who made the trip up from Florida, and held her own. Despite just losing control of her best throw of the day, which resulted in a foul, Cuthbertson (166'10") earned a runner-up finish to IMG's Aubrey Pelletier (173'4"). In the final event of the night, the discus, Cuthbertson was joined by Radcliffe. On her second attempt of the competition, Lexington's captain delivered a season best throw of 124'11" that put her firmly in the lead going into finals. Unfortunately, her fellow Bay State athlete, Taunton's Sophia Olaniyan, caught hold of a huge throw of 135'6" on her final attempt to steal victory away. Meanwhile, Radcliffe struggled through the early rounds of the event. However, on her final throw, the LHS sophomore unleashed the discus 113'10", and launched herself up to fourth place overall.
Day 2 began for Lexington with the Finch brothers in the 2000m steeplechase. The five lap event, which features four 33-inch barriers, plus a water jump on each lap, is arguably the most grueling event in high school track & field, but one in which a number of LHS athletes have excelled in recent years. In the seeded section, senior Sam Finch hung back off the hot pace through the first quarter mile. He then moved up through the field to cross the line fifth in his heat with a new personal best of 6:18.92. That mark would hold up to place sixth overall after one athlete from the unseeded section delivered the second best overall performance of the day. Also in that unseeded section, Sam's twin brother, Henry (6:41.39), ran a big PR of his own to finish 11th overall. Back in the throws, Cuthbertson finally found gold, as she won the shot put with a throw of 38'10.25". Along with her victory, Radcliffe had the best shot put performance of her young career, with three throws landing over two feet farther than her previous PR. Radcliffe's top mark of 29'8.50" earned her a seventh place finish to round out the weekend.
