Hayward Field - Eugene, OR
RESULTS
EUGENE, OR - Before she could join the rest of her team in Philadelphia, Lexington's senior captain, Ainsley Cuthbertson, had one final bit of business to take care of. The USATF Under-20 Championships, held in "Track Town USA", brought together the best high school and collegiate athletes aged 16-19 to compete for a shot to represent their country at the U20 World Championships later this summer. As expected, Hayward Magic was on full display, as the final rounds saw Oklahoma State University's Burklie Burton unleashed a 212'6" bomb to win gold. Meanwhile, the second spot at Worlds exchanged hands in the final round three separate times as the University of Kentucky's Meagan Ewers (203'2") delivered a massive PR to eclipse the huge personal bests set by a pair of high schoolers. Along with the fireworks at the top of the podium, Cuthbertson was at her all-time best in the biggest competition of her career, to date.
The LHS senior got off to a solid start with a first round throw of 173'4" (53.82m). That throw had her in eighth position overall, which would have been good enough to make the final spot in the finals. On her second attempt, she all but assured that she would qualify for those finals, as Cuthbertson delivered a personal best of 177'4" (54.05m) to move up to sixth place. Sure enough, that mark stamped her ticket to the finals, which made her one of three prep athletes to qualify. In those finals, Cuthbertson found another level with her fifth round attempt. She launched the 4kg hammer 178'0" (54.26m) to eclipse her previous best, but still had one round to go. The final round that produced four throws over 60 meters, also saw Cuthbertson go out the way she has so many times this year, with a personal best. With a mark of 179'0" (54.57m) the University of Alabama commit earned herself a podium finish, sixth overall, and showed any doubters still out there that she is one of the finest clutch performers in the nation.
Up Next
Cuthbertson will now board a plane in Eugene to fly to Philadelphia where she will join her teammates at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, and compete in the hammer throw on Saturday morning. Lexington is right back to it on Saturday, as the team has its busiest day of the weekend. Follow along all day beginning at 10am, as freshman phenom Abbey Kohut will kick things off in the freshman division of the triple jump. All events can be livestreamed free HERE.
