RESULTS
LEXINGTON, MA - After a sensational performance at the Division 1 Relays this past Saturday, The Minutemen were back home on Wednesday to face off against Winchester. The Red and Black boasted a number of strong individuals, but in the end were no match for Lexington's strength and depth. The Minutemen rolled to a pair of victories, as the boys won by a score of 101-35, while the girls took home the win 100-36.
For the boys, the highlight of the meet came from one of the youngest athletes on the team. Freshman Daniel Sun competed in the discus, and, despite the rain putting a damper on much of the competition, he was at his absolute best. After the wet discus slipped off his hand on his first attempt, his second flew true, and landed at 131'6". On his third and final attempt, Daniel Sun took it to another level. He unleashed the discus a whopping 140'7" out into the sector. That mark not only won the competition going away, and qualified him for the MIAA Division 1 Championship, but it was also the best throw by any freshman in Massachusetts, by over 22 feet! A simply sensational performance, which all but ensures the future for LHS's Bomb Squad will continue to be bright. Along with the big day for Daniel Sun, senior captain Amari Mow found his form in the triple jump. After a foul on his first attempt, Mow found the board, and exploded his way out to 43'5.25". That performance makes him the fourth LHS triple jumper to hit a jump that was marked above the Divisional standard this spring. The final big highlight of the afternoon came in the 2 mile. Going all the way back to the cross country season, senior Sam Finch raised his game to another level this year. On Wednesday, he had another breakthrough, as he dipped under the elusive 10-minute barrier for the first time in his career. Finch led the race from the gun, and came through the mile in just over 5 minutes. He continued to drive the pace at the front for the next three laps before he found another gear in the final quarter mile. With a 68-second final trip around the oval, Finch crossed the line with a time of 9:55.18, which blew past his previous PR by over 8 seconds.
In the girls' meet, the story of the day was superstar sophomore Amelia Whorton. After a record-breaking performance this past weekend at Relays, Whorton made her season debut in the open mile and 800m. After a conservative opening 800m, the LHS sophomore turned on the gas over the final two laps of the mile. She used a 2:23 second half split to cross the line nearly 40 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. In the end, Whorton delivered an MA #2 time of 4:57.21, which qualified her for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Later in the meet she was back on the track in the 800m, where Winchester rolled out their trio of strong middle distance runners, Julia Ramsey, Riley Newman, and Chloe Walker to face her. With a 64-second opening lap, Whorton quickly put the race to bed. She cruised through finish line of the 800m in 2:12.64, which is the fastest time run in Massachusetts this spring, and was her second National qualifying mark of the afternoon. Back over in the discus circle, freshman Naomi Hardy continued her quiet ascension up the LHS depth chart. On her final throw of the competition, Hardy delivered a personal best of 93'4.50". That mark cemented her among the ranks of the top-10 freshman in the state. Finally, a shoutout has to be given to junior Saaya Krishnan for her performance in the 100m hurdles. Krishnan took home her first career varsity win over 10 hurdles, and, despite a headwind, dipped under the 18-second barrier for the first time in her career with a time of 17.97 seconds.
