THE MINUTEMEN'S DEPTH SHINES TO EARN A PAIR OF VICTORIES OVER ARLINGTON
Meet Information
Arlington Dual Meet
September 17, 2024
Lincoln Field - Lexington, MA
RESULTS
LEXINGTON, MA - The last time the Lex Girls bested Arlington in Cross Country, athletes were racing in masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the next 1,466 days, Arlington turned themselves into one of the finest teams in the state winning 22 straight Middlesex League dual meets, 3 Liberty Division titles, 3 League Championships, and an MIAA Divisional crown. During this stretch the Spy Ponders relied heavily on a stellar group from the Class of 2024. With that class now onto the collegiate level, the Lex Girls looked to bring an end their streak of nine-straight defeats at the hands of Arlington. And, despite Arlington senior Evie Lauzon's (19:28.37) emphatic victory in a #8 all-time mark on LHS's home course, The Minutemen's pack came through with a decisive win by a score of 20-42. On the boys' side it was a different story. The two teams traded the top six spots, but it was the bottom of the varsity crew for LHS that made the difference. The Minutemen sealed a 26-31 victory as their four through seven runners placed seventh, eighth, 10th, and 11th overall.
Lauzon left little to doubt with her individual victory. Arlington's senior had sizeable lead at the mile mark that Lex Girls never really closed. However, the pack of freshman Janie Conrad and Ella Tyson, along with sophomores Callie Glenn, Alycia Charest and Erin Ehmann, as well as junior captain Meghan Caldera ran right with Arlington senior Sophia Francis through two miles. From there, the race was on. The group strung out a bit over the final mile, but in the end the results were eerily similar to last week against Wakefield. The race was again won by Conrad (20:10.04), with Glenn (20:30.11) in second. Last week's one through five split was 25 seconds, this week's was 29. The top group had the addition of Tyson, who turned in a time of 20:39.39 to place sixth overall, but other than that it was same story different chapter that led the Lex Girls to victory. Caldera was fourth overall in a time of 20:30.49. Charest was just behind with a fifth place finish in a time of 20:34.26. Ehmann turned in a solid run of 20:42.89 to place seventh ahead of Francis, who was Arlington's #2. Junior captain Thayer DiCerbo returned to form with a time of 21:02.77. She was followed by another strong performance from senior Brett Castro (21:04.76). Sophomore Josie Bettencourt (21:11.34) and Leontine Meunier (22:54.22) rounded out the top-10 for The Minutemen.
LHS laid off the fast pace early in the race, as Arlington's top boys took things out quickly in the opening mile. However, as athletes approached the second mile the race had opened up. It was Arlington senior Samuel Davis who was at the front, with LHS sophomore Owen Ross on his heels. The leaders were followed by a group that included senior captain Max Zhang and fellow classmate Nathan Cunningham wedged between Arlington's next two runners. At that point, the race was definitely still in doubt as the groups charged up the final Baskin hill. Davis and Ross appeared first back at Lincoln Field and battled to the finish, which Davis won. However, Ross turned in a huge personal best of 16:50.63 to earn second. Arlington's Daichi Collins broke away from Zhang (17:03.21) and Cunningham (17:03.60) to earn third, but LHS's seniors still landed fourth and fifth overall. The Spy Ponders took the next place, but it was sophomore Eric House (17:13.57) and junior Owen Kuder (17:14.32) who turned in big time races for their team to finish seventh and eighth overall. And, when juniors Colin Smith and Sam Finch crossed the line in 17:23.37 and 17:24.48 respectively they put a stamp on their team's victory. Along with the top-seven, freshman Andrew Zhang (17:24.56), senior Zach Barry (17:28.59), and junior Liam Singh (18:08.33) made up the rest of the top-10.
