LEXINGTON, MA - The Minutemen opened up Middlesex League action on Tuesday with a visit from Wakefield. A member of the League's Freedom Division, the Warriors have built one of the strongest programs in Massachusetts in recent years. However, even the best of programs can be humbled by the daunting hills of Lexington's home course on Baskin and Loring roads. That was exactly what happened on Tuesday afternoon as LHS's boys took down the Warriors by a score of 19-42. While the Lex Girls took care of business with a 15-48 victory of their own.
The story of the day for The Minutemen starts with the effort of Trevor Stevens. One of the star sophomores LHS boasts, Stevens came to the meet with a plan to test his limits in his 5k season debut. He did just that. A 5:05 opening mile gapped the field, but Stevens was just getting started. He navigated the hills of the second mile and powered through the two-mile mark in 10:12. Stevens charged up the final Baskin hill to the roar of the spectators, and as he approached the homestretch, with the race in hand, the only issue still in doubt was if former Woburn great Anshel Isles' course record of 16:05 would survive the day. Stevens left no doubt. He cruised through the line in an official time of 15:57.72 to establish the new record and become the first athlete to break the elusive 16-minute barrier on Lexington's 5k course. Behind Stevens, Wakefield senior Brandon Nett outlasted LHS's second and third runners to earn second overall. However, The Minutemen's depth was too much too handle as senior Nathan Cunningham (17:05.82), sophomore Owen Ross (17:07.89), junior Liam Singh (17:14.44), and junior Owen Kuder (17:22.55) took the next four spots to seal the victory. Along with the top-five, LHS also saw strong performances in the Varsity Race from junior Colin Smith (17:37.19), freshman Ethan Wang (17:42.93), and senior Daniel Weir (17:51.55). Showing off their depth, The Minutemen took the top 14 spots in the Junior Varsity Race as well. It was sophomore Eric House came through first with a time of 17:24.73. He was followed closely by freshman Andrew Zhang (17:33.35) and junior Sam Finch (17:37.52). Freshman Rhys Behling (17:42.83), senior captain Will Fletcher (17:44.77), and junior Will Parker (17:45.68) also turned in varsity caliber races from the JV section.
While Trevor Stevens might have been the star of the show for LHS's boys, it was a total team effort that brought the Lex Girls to victory over the Warriors. When the gun fired Wakefield senior Grace Brackett and sophomore Riley Mitchell charged out to the front and built a sizeable lead through the mile. The Minutemen's top pack came through in a conservative 6:41 opening mile with barely a stride between the group of five girls, which included freshman Janie Conrad, sophomores Callie Glenn, Alycia Charest and Erin Ehmann, as well as junior captain Meghan Caldera. That group held together and overtook Mitchell on the hills. And, when they came through two miles, they zeroed in on Brackett who still maintained a decent lead. However, LHS's top five road the momentum of a fast downhill to eventually surpass the Warriors' top athlete. In the end Conrad was the top finisher for The Minutemen. Her time of 19:56.19 earned her the first high school victory of her career. Next it was Glenn with a strong run of 20:12.09, followed by the trio of Charest (20:20.13), Caldera (20:21.30), and Ehmann (20:21.98). Along with the great performance by the top-five, senior Brett Castro made a strong return to racing. Her time of 21:26.39 was her best performance since her freshman year, and came with the kind of grit and determination that led her to success early in her career. Sophomore Josie Bettencourt finished just behind Castro with a time of 21:26.81 to round out the top-seven for the Lex Girls in what was nothing short of a perfect 5k debut for a team with high aspirations this season.
