Meet Information
Woburn Dual Meet
September 24, 2024
Horn Pond - Woburn, MA
RESULTS
WOBURN, MA - For the first time this season The Minutemen were on the road for Middlesex League dual meet action. LHS traveled to Horn Pond to face off against the Woburn, and no matter the circumstances when the two teams clash, they consistently bring out the best in each other. Tuesday's meet was no different. While Lexington's Boys rested five of their top seven in preparation for this weekend's Ocean State Invitational, those that raced gave Woburn's best everything they could handle. In the end, they fell short by the narrowest of margins, 29-30. Meanwhile the Lex Girls rested their top group, but were still able to deliver a big victory by a score of 19-42. That makes two straight weeks winning by that exact margin.
Early in the Boys Race it became clear that this race would be a test of high end talent versus depth. Through the midway point of the race, Woburn's top three were out fast with only senior captain Max Zhang matching the pace. About 20 seconds back, a group of eight LHS athletes were giving chance separated by no more than a few steps. As the race came out of the woods just past the two-mile mark, Woburn's top-two had broken free from Zhang and Woburn's number three runner, junior Dawit Kulubya. Zhang and Kulubya battled their ways up the hill and with just over 1k to go, the LHS captain made a move that appeared to be decisive. However, as the two approached the final stretch, Kulubya found another gear and just edged out Zhang for third place as Woburn's top-three turned in stellar performances. Despite The Minutemen taking the next eight places, in a dual meet, a 1-2-3 finish guarantees victory for any team because only seven athletes count in the scoring. So while Woburn's fourth and fifth runners finished 12th and 13th, they earned 11 and 12 points respectively to give their team a victory with 29 points. While it was a disappointing loss for The Minutemen, there were a number of standout performances. For his efforts, Zhang delivered a time of 16:09 for the 3-mile course as LHS's top finisher. Junior Will Parker had a major breakthrough race to finish next with a time of 16:25. He was followed by senior Zach Barry, who delivered a strong race with a time of 16:35. Bringing a bit more "will" power was senior captain Will Fletcher who ran 16:40 to finish third for LHS, just ahead of junior Sean Ryan (16:40) and senior Daniel Weir (16:41). Sophomore Gabe Ostrower (16:44) was a few meters behind before he crossed the line. Rounding out the top-10 for The Minutemen was freshman Andrew Zhang (16:47), junior Colin Ryan (16:50), and senior Daniel Ryans (19:03).
After Tuesday, the Lex Girls have now raced in three Middlesex League dual meets. A freshman has been their top finisher in each of them, as Ella Tyson took home the first victory of her high school career. Tyson dominated the race from start to finish. She cruised through the opening mile in a brisk 6:05, and went on to win by nearly a minute with a time of 19:08. Flipping the script from the Boys Race, sophomore Josie Bettencourt (20:06) and senior Brett Castro (20:07) polished off the 1-2-3 sweep to guarantee victory for the Lex Girls. Senior Leontine Meunier was next for The Minutemen, sixth overall in a time of 20:55. Senior captain Claire Cunningham (21:12) and freshman Talia Rech (21:13) came across the line in seventh and eighth place respectively. They were followed by another pair of LHS athletes, as freshman Isabella Gorospe (21:29) and junior Prachi Aggarwal (21:30) both finished top-10 overall. Freshman Addie Haiar had a major breakthrough on Tuesday, as she finished ninth for the team in 21:54. And, junior Sophie Kuo was Lexington's final varsity finisher with a time of 22:21.
