LEXINGTON, MA - On Small Business Saturday hundreds of participants and supporters descended on Lincoln Park for the Lexington Legacy 5k. The race - which supports the nearly 300 boys and girls in the Lexington High School Cross Country / Track & Field program - is the signature community event that the team hosts each year, and is organized by the Boosters of Lexington Track-XC.

Through the generous support of nearly 40 businesses, dozens more individual donors, and all of the participants who powered over the hills of the LHS XC course, the event was able to raise over $55,000 for the team. In addition to supporting the school's only true no-cut sport, those funds allow the program to continue to provide opportunities for young people in our community to participate in track & field, as the LHS team has made a concerted effort in recent years to bring the sport it loves to the larger community. Along with the Legacy 5k, the team hosts winter and spring track & field clinics for middle and elementary school-aged kids, and revived Lexington's 5th Grade Track & Field meet last June at the Center Track. This year, the LHS XC / Track & Field team also partnered with the Lexington Food Pantry to host a food drive to support those in need this holiday season.

As for the race itself, it was a lively affair from start to finish. On what was a brisk, but sunny, late fall morning, music filled the air all morning as friends and family gathered at Lincoln Park in anticipation of the race. When the gun finally fired, the field charged out on the course. LHS Class of 2024 alum, Joey Ryan - a rising collegiate star who competes for Holy Cross - won the race in a record time of 16:16. Meanwhile, Lexington’s own Liz Mettetal, 41, (pictured above left) was the first woman across the line. She dominated the race, winning in a time of 19:51, which would have won every home cross country meet LHS hosted this fall.

After this year’s success, in addition to all to members of the community who participated and donated to the race, the LHS Cross Country / Track & Field team would like to offer a special thank you to all of the volunteers who helped out, to the Department of Public Works, the Lexington Police Department, the staff at Town Hall, and so many vendors in the area who helped to make the Lexington Legacy 5k a great event. We could not have done it without your support, and we cannot wait for next year's race!
