LEXINGTON, MA - After a great week of racing down in the Ocean State, The Minutemen were back home on a quick turnaround as they welcomed their rivals from Woburn. On paper the Tanners did not have the strength or depth to match up with Lexington. However, something about this rivalry always seems to bring out the best in the athletes that toe the line. That was no different on Tuesday, as The Minutemen delivered a few breakout performances on their way to victory. LHS's boys won by a score of 20-43. Meanwhile, the Lex girls took home the win by a score of 17-40.
In the Boys Varsity Race, seniors Will Parker, Sam Finch, and Owen Kuder were out in the top pack along with juniors Eric House, Finn O'Donnell, and Woburn senior Dawit Kulubya. The group came through the opening mile in 5:24 before charging over the vaunted hills that guard the middle mile of Lexington's historic course. As the race approached the second mile mark, Parker was in the lead, just strides ahead of Kulubya, with his teammates trailing not far behind. His 5:20 split for the second mile stretched things out, but made it clear that he was committed to compete for the win against a Woburn athlete who boasted a sub 16-minute 5k PR. Parker continued to fight hard over the final mile, but eventually Kulubya pulled away to cross the line first in 16:42.6. For his efforts, Parker delivered a huge personal best of 16:47.1 to finish runner-up. Finch was next across the line for LHS. He continued to build on his strong senior season with a third place finish in 16:52.9. Next, was the one-two punch of House (17:09.1) and Kuder (17:10.8). O'Donnell was the all-important fifth man for Lexington. He crossed the line in 17:19.3 to place sixth. Fellow classmate Gabriel Ostrower was next in 17:20.5, with sophomore Rohan Banerji (17:21.5), and senior Colin Ryan (17:22.7) right behind him. From there, junior Arjun Raha (17:57.6) dipped under 18 minutes on the home course for the first time to place 11th. And, sophomore Jayant Krishnan rounded out the top 10 with a time of 18:09.9, which placed him 13th overall.
While Parker delivered a breakout performance on the boys' side of things, the story of the 2025 edition of the Lexington v. Woburn rivalry cannot be told without talking about sophomore Addie Haiar. As a freshman Haiar - who focuses her energy on the 400m on the track - debuted on the LHS home course in 24:35. By the end of the season she worked that time down to 22:51. After a strong freshman campaign last winter and spring on the track, Haiar was poised to take a step forward this fall. The sophomore took a solid step in her season debut with a time of 22:15, but, on Tuesday, she took a giant leap. When the gun fired, junior Josie Bettencourt and sophomore Daphne Warren went out to an early lead, and came through the mile in 6:31. Haiar was about 20 meters back on her way to a 6:37 opening mile. Over the hills in the second mile, Haiar was able to close that gap a little, as she split 13:24 for 2 miles. Call it turning on the jets, flipping the switch, finding another gear, or whatever you would like, but in the over the final 1.1 miles, Haiar ran a furious 6:18 pace to blast into the lead. She turned down the homestretch with only the clock in her sights, and crossed the finish line in sensational time of 20:20.7. After doing the work of leading early on, Bettencourt finished second in 20:52.1, while Warren was third in 21:03.6. Sophomore Isabella Gorospe was fourth overall in 21:37.8. Freshman Victoria Davidson gutted her way to a time of 21:59.2 to place seventh overall, which sealed the final score for the Lex girls. Fellow classmate Beatrix Koch-Kochrane (22:59.9), sophomore Talia Rech (23:06.9), and junior Allie Galloway (23:08.5) finished 10th, 11th, and 12th respectively. Then it was freshman Emma Arnold who was the final varsity finisher on the day for Lexington. She finished 14th in a time of 25:23.9.
