CAPTAIN PRINCIPLES
REQUIREMENTS TO BE ELIGIBLE TO BE SELECTED AS A CAPTAIN
EXPECTATIONS
- To value the success of the Team ahead of their own individual success
- To be a leader and an example of how to support all teammates on and off the track
- To help create a culture of accountability to the Team
- To create a positive team environment through enthusiasm and teamwork
- To provide a system of clear communication between athletes, captains, and coaches
REQUIREMENTS TO BE ELIGIBLE TO BE SELECTED AS A CAPTAIN
- Student-athletes must read Jeff Janssen's book, The Team Captain's Leadership Manual
- Student-athletes must complete a multi-week leadership training workshop with the team's coaches
- Student-athletes who will miss a team-scored meet over school vacations are not eligible to be captain
EXPECTATIONS
- Captains are required to read and understand the Team’s Guiding Principles
- Captains must meet with the coaching staff throughout the season to continue to build on their leadership training
- Captains are expected to go above and beyond to be at all practices, even when conflicts arise
- Captains are required to attend all team scoring meets regardless of whether or not they are competing
- Captains are expected to know the names of everyone in their respective event groups
- If a captain(s) is not meeting these expectations, coaches reserve the right to remove them from their position
