In Memoriam: Coach Lisa George-Cox
Boys and Girls Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Asst. Coach (Sprints) 1986-1990, 2013-2021
Syracuse Women's Track & Field 1982-1985 California State University Los Angles, MA Class of 1997 Syracuse University, BA Class of 1985 Lexington High School - MA, Class of 1981 Lisa George-Cox was a devoted mother, and beloved educator and coach in the Lexington Public School system. She was born and raised in Roxbury, MA. A student in the METCO program, Lisa was a 1981 graduate of Lexington High School, received her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University, and her graduate degree from California State University LA. A prolific sprinter, Lisa was a three-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic track athlete at LHS, and a proud member of the inaugural Syracuse Orange Women’s Track & Field team from 1981-85. At Syracuse, she distinguished herself as a Big East All-Star. Lisa was later an honored inductee of the inaugural class of the LHS Athletic Hall of Fame. After college, Lisa returned to LHS to coach both girls and boys Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field athletes for several years. In 2013, Lisa rejoined the LHS coaching staff as the head of the sprints squad. During her final tenure at LHS she helped lead the girls and boys teams to 14 Middlesex League Regular Season Championships, 16 Middlesex League Meet Championships, and 3 MIAA Division 1 Championships. She also coached 9 individual MIAA All-State Champions, 8 All-Americans, and saw 21 LHS records broken by her athletes. In 2020, she was awarded the Bill O’Connor Courage & Humanitarian Award by the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association, for her relentless drive to coach through the day-to-day adversity of fighting cancer. As impactful as she was as a track athlete and coach, Lisa had a special passion for working with children with learning differences. She was a staunch advocate for student centered learning, before it was fashionable, and a gifted teacher, who over the course of her 30 year career, transformed the lives of students and those families she partnered with. |
