FITCHBURG, MA - The Minutemen went up against the best that Massachusetts had to offer this past Saturday at the MIAA All-State Championships. On the Boys side, The Minutemen finished 6th overall with 26 points. The highlight of the meet came in the final event of the night, the 4x400 meter relay. After running winning the Division 1 Eastern Massachusetts title last week, and with the top seeded time coming into All-States, the team of sophomores Andrew McGovern and Josh Backert, as well as seniors Thomas Lingard and Lucas Honohan were poised to make a run at the State Title. As was the case last week, the race came down to a battle in the final 100 meters between Honohan and Newton North junior Theo Burba, but unlike last week it was Honohan who was behind as they two came charging down the homestretch. Despite this, history did in fact repeat itself as Honohan remained relaxed under the pressure, found another gear, and with an unofficial split of 48.5 seconds he took the tape and the title in the fastest time run in Massachusetts this year (3:20.16). The Minutemen's time was not only good enough to become State Champions, it also broke the Lexington High School record in the event, and qualified the relay team for the National Championships in Greensboro North Carolina later this month.
The Girls were represented by a pair of sophomores at the All-State Championships. After finishing ninth in the Pentathlon on Thursday afternoon, star sophomore Rachel Caldwell-Glixon was back competing in the High Jump. Going into the meet Caldwell-Glixon was seeded 29th of 37 competitors with a height of 5'0", but as she has done all season for The Minutemen, she came up big in a big spot. With a personal best jump of 5'4", Caldwell-Glixon vaulted all the way up to a tie for eighth place, making her the only point scorer for the Girls. Fellow sophomore, and defending Division 1 Eastern Massachusetts Champion, Chrisondra Awomah finished 12th in the Shot Put with a throw of 35'2.5".
