ARLINGTON, MA - In what proved to be a tale of two races, The Minutemen came home from Arlington's 5k course 1-1 on the afternoon. Behind the strong efforts of juniors Danna Ofek (20:05) and Pauline Steines (21:05), senior captain Kesinia Sortor (21:08), and sophomore Lina Jafaar (21:21), the Girls took the top four places en route to a 16-45 victory over Arlington. On the Boys side it was a different story. Lead by the 2017 5000m National Champion and 2018 runner up, senior captain Ryan Oosting, Arlington put forth their best performance of the season out kicking The Minutemen to grab a 28-29 victory.
In addition to the top four, the Girls had strong performances across the board. Zoe Gu was the final scoring member for The Minutemen, placing sixth in a time of 21:36. Sophomore Izzy Jakimczyk was eighth in a time of 21:44. Maude Hajjaj was ninth overall, running 21:49 in the process. Freshmen Clara Fu cracked the top ten on the team for the first time this year. Fu was tenth overall (eighth for The Minutemen) with a time of 21:55. Sophomore Anna Nelson finished 11th in 21:56, while junior Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas placed 13th in a time of 21:58.
The Boys were lead by senior captain Eli Gappelberg (16:23) and sophomore Nick Porter (16:24), who finished second and third behind Oosting (16:20). After the top three, a pair of Arlington runners crossed the line. But the race ended up coming down to a trio of runners bunched together with less than 100m to go in the race. Lexington's senior captain Jeb Jacob and breakout junior Matt McAlarney, as well as Arlington junior Neil Tracey fought it out to the finish. In the end Tracey was best able to keep his legs under him crossing the line in 16:53, just one second ahead of McAlarney (16:54) and four seconds ahead of Jacob (16:57). After that trio, The Minutemen were able to grab the next four spots with Maxim Slobodchikov (17:18), Selvin Backert (17:21), Nate Croke (17:22), and Max DiCerbo (17:24) finishing ninth, tenth, 11th, and 12th respectively. But with only seven places on each team counting toward the final score the damage had already been done, and while Arlington's fifth runner finished 13th, it counted as 12 points and gave Arlington the win.
Up Next
The Boys are back in action this Saturday, as they will get their first shot at "the mountain," Northfield Mountain, which is the site of this year's All-State Championships. The Minutemen will be in the first race of the day, the "Peter Conroy" Boys Race, which will start at 12:30pm.
