MINUTEMEN CONQUER THE MOUNTAIN AND MAKE A STATEMENT AT BAYSTATE INVITE
Meet Information
Baystate Invitational
October 13, 2018
Northfield Mountain - Northfield, MA
RESULTS
NORTHFIELD, MA - After suffering a disappointing one point loss four days earlier against Arlington, The Minutemen were looking for some revenge on Saturday at the Baystate Invitational. The meet - where next month's All-State Championship will be held - featured all of the top teams from around the State, and hopefully served as a preview of things to come for Lexington.
The Minutemen competed in the Peter Conway Race, which featured the largest teams in the State. As was the case last Tuesday, Arlington's Ryan Oosting controlled the race from the start and took the victory. Unlike Tuesday, The Minutemen's tightly knit pack was not going to be beaten. With an average time nearly 20 seconds better than second place Brookline, and 30 seconds faster than Arlington, who finished fourth overall, The Minutemen took home the hardware, besting the talented field with 76 points.
For the first time this season star sophomore Nick Porter was the first finisher for Lexington (fourth overall), completing the challenging mountain course in 16:28.15. Porter was followed by senior captain Eli Gappelberg, who also cracked the top 10. Gappelberg's time of 16:42.87 was enough for eighth place. In addition to the strong finish by their top two, The Minutemen placed another pair in the top 25. Senior captain Jeb Jacob (17:16.47) and junior Matt McAlarney (17:18.44) finished 21st and 23rd respectively. The all important fifth man, junior Selvin Backert, finished 27th in a time of 17:27.33 and in doing so sealed the win.
In addition to the championship level performance put on by the top five, Lexington had many other strong performances on the day. Senior captain Lucas DiCerbo returned to form, placing 32nd in a time of 17:41.50. Juniors Adam Bernstein (17:50.14) and Seth Cutler (17:57.41) were 35th and 41st respectively. Even though he lost his shoe less than 400 meters into the race, sophomore Max DiCerbo still finished in the top 50. His time of 18:05.26 was good enough for 47th. Fellow sophomores Nate Croke (18:13.50) and Maxim Slobodchikov (18:20.77) were 51st and 60th respectively. The Minutemen's lone freshmen in the race, Daniel Ramsey was 71st in 18:32.50.
