NEWBURYPORT, MA - The Minutemen kicked off the 2018 Cross Country season this weekend at the 19th Annual Clipper Relays. This unique meet features each school being split up into multiple three person relays, with each leg running the same two mile loop through the woods.
In the first race of the day, the Girls top team of juniors Danna Ofek and Pauline Steines, combined with senior captain Kesinia Sortor to finish in second place overall in a time of 36:09. The winner of the meet was the top team of Exeter High, who finished in a time of 35:55. The Minutmen also placed another team in the top ten, with their second team placing ninth overall. Ofek, Sortor, and Steines ran unofficial splits of 11:51, 12:08, and 12:09 respectively. Lina Jafaar split 12:22, Anna Nelson split 12:41, Maude Hajjaj split 12:51, and Summer Spencer split 13:09. Zoe Gu (13:17), Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas (13:23), and Izzy Jakimczyk (13:50) rounded out the top ten for the team.
On the Boys side, The Minutemen's top team was lead by senior captain Eli Gappelberg who ran an unofficial 9:43 split. He handed off to junior Matt McAlarney who ran a strong 9:55 on the second leg keeping The Minutemen in the hunt. But it was sophomore Nick Porter (9:53), who just edged out host school Newburyport at the line, that brought home a third place finish for The Minutemen (29:46). The top team from Wellesley took home the title with a new course record time of 29:21. Needham's top team finished second and also broke the previous course record with their time of 29:30. Lexington's second team of senior captain Jeb Jacob (10:09), and juniors Micah Benson (10:29) and Selvin Backert (10:19) placed sixth overall. Sophomores Maxim Slobodchikov and Max DiCerbo ran identical splits of 10:21. Junior Adam Bernstein split 10:30 and freshman Evan Eberle rounded out the top ten for the team with a split of 10:35.

The Minutemen will begin their Middlesex League schedule on Tuesday September 18th with a crossover dual meet against Melrose. The home opener - at Lincoln Field - is set to begin at 3:45pm.
