ANDOVER, MA - This weekend, The Minutemen competed at the MIAA Division 1 Eastern Massachusetts Championships. While Lowell dominated the meet scoring 123 points, the highest total in recent memory, the Boys put in a strong all around effort placing third with 57 points, right behind second place Acton-Boxborough's 59. There were many standout performances for the Boys, but two Minutemen stood out above the rest. Senior Lucas Honohan started off his day by placing second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.54 seconds. Honohan was back in the relays where he ran the third leg of the 4x100 meter relay, which came in fourth in a time of 43.77 seconds. But Honohan truly saved his best performance for last. As the anchor of the 4x400 meter relay team he was given the baton and the lead by fellow senior Thomas Lingard. Honohan breezed down the backstretch and coming around the final turn Newton North's Theo Burba had pulled even with him. With less than a hundred meters to go, Honohan dug deep to find another gear and took the tape in the third fastest time in Massachusetts this year (3:23.94). All totaled Honohan was a part of 23 of The Minutemen's points on the afternoon. Not to be outdone, sophomore Andrew McGovern continued his breakout season with three scoring performances of his own. His day started with the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, where he ran a personal best 56.26 seconds and placed third. McGovern came back in the 800 meters where he picked up one point for The Minutmen, placing eighth (1:58.56). Finally, he teamed up with Honohan, Lingard, and fellow sophomore Josh Backert to take the victory in the 4x400 meter relay.
On the Girls side, The Minutmen were lead by star sophomore Chrisondra Awomah. After smashing the school record in the event earlier this season, Awomah came into Division 1 Championships seeded first in the Shot Put. Despite fouling her first two of three preliminary throws, Awomah was able to launch a throw which qualified her for finals on her last attempt. Again in the finals she waited until her final throw to drop the hammer on the rest of the field. With a throw of 35'9.25", Awomah won the event by over a foot.
