SUDBURY, MA - The Lexington Boys and Girls teams competed at the annual MSTCA Division 1 Relays in Sudbury on Saturday. The Girls finished in 19th of 23 teams, and the Boys came in 18th of 24. Among many strong performances by the two teams, the Girls Shot Put Relay team of sophomore Chrisondra Awomah, junior Sam Robinson, and senior Joan Sullivan combined to break the school record in the event. Their combined distance of 89'10" broke the previous record of 89'0.25", a record which has stood since 1997. In addition to the record, the girls finished 4th overall in the event.
On the Boys side the top performance of the day came from a quartet of underclassman. Freshman Maxim Slobodchikov teamed up with sophomores Andrew McGovern, and brothers Josh and Selvin Backert to come in 4th in the 4x800 Meter Relay. Their time of 8:18.88 was enough to qualify for the Division 1 Championships. Each of the boys ran an unofficial personal record for their splits, with McGovern leading off in 1:59.6, Josh Backert coming through in 2:06.6, Slobodchikov running 2:09.2, and Selvin Backert bringing the team home in 2:03.5.
The Heart of an Competitor: During the Boys 4x100 Meter Relay, the youngest member of the relay, sophomore Salvador Jaramillo was set to start the race. After blazing out of the blocks, Jaramillo pulled up lame about fifty meters into the race and fell to the track. Despite the injury and the pain that was clear to all the spectators watching, Jaramillo got back to his feet and hobbled his way to the first exchange zone where senior Cameron Hofland was waiting to continue the race. Hofland handed off to senior Lucas Honohan, and junior Kazu Uda-Thach finished off the race with a time of 46.15, still good enough to beat over half of the teams in the field. While no one would have faulted Jaramillo for simply staying down and being carried off the track to the trainers' tent, the fact that he refused to let his team down and finished his leg is a testament not just to the character, but the heart of this young man. We should all take a lesson from Sal's example of what it means to be a competitor, and more importantly a teammate.
