BURLINGTON, MA - In what was both of their first times competing in the most grueling event in Track & Field, sophomore Shymon Samsel (4663 points) and junior Joe Tibbles (4368 points) showed well in the Decathlon finishing 18th and 27th respectively in a field of 78 competitors. On Day 1, Samsel used a 12.48 second 100 meter dash and a 55.42 second 400 meter dash to tally his two highest point totals on the day, 560 and 582 respectively. Sitting at 2417 points heading into Day 2, Samsel started off the second day of competition with a strong performance in his first ever 110 meter High Hurdles race, running 17.36 seconds and earning 587 points in the event. In the tenth and final event of the competition, Samsel turned in a blistering time of 4:36.63 in the 1500 meters. His time earned him 702 points, which was his highest point total in any event. In addition to his great finish in the 1500 meters, Samsel also scored personal bests in the Long Jump, Discus, and Triple Jump.
Tibbles had himself quite the Day 1, which included a 12.17 second 100 meter dash (618 points), a 54.62 second 400 meter dash (614 points), and back to back 492 point scores in the Long Jump (18'2.5") and Shot Put (33'1.75"). After the first five events Tibbles was sitting at 2519 points. His Day 2 was highlighted by a 111'1" throw in the Javelin (354 points) and a 5:04.30 in the 1500 meters, which was good enough for 535 points. Considering that both of these athletes will be returning next year, and with this being the first time either of these boys had the chance to compete in many of these events, let alone all together in the Decathlon, the future looks bright for The Minutemen in the multi-events.
Up Next
The Minutemen will be back in action this Saturday as they travel up to New Hampshire to compete in the New England Championships. The meet, which will be held at Wildcat Stadium on the University of New Hampshire campus in Durham, is set to go off at 10:00am.
