EBERLE'S DOUBLE GOLD PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS FRESHMEN/SOPHOMORE MEET
Meet Information
Auerbach Freshmen/Sophomore Meet
January 5, 2020
Reggie Lewis Center - Boston, MA
RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - Saturday The Minutemen were back at Reggie Lewis to compete in the annual Freshmen/Sophomore Meet. This meet is the one time during the season when the underclassmen take center stage to see how the stack up against fellow classmates from around the state. And if this meet does serve as a predictor for how young athletes will perform in years to come at Divisional and All-State Championship Meets, Lexington has a lot of young talent waiting to make their mark.
On the girls side The Minutemen's top performance on the day came from sophomore jumper Anna Yang. She turned in a near personal best leap of 16'1.25" in the Long Jump which placed her sixth in the competition. Along with Yang's big jump, LHS had four other girls land on the medal stand. Sophomore Carolyn Lane ran a season best 9.88 seconds in the prelims of the 55m High Hurdles, and would go on to place seventh in the finals. Fellow classmate Raquel Batista-Vieira threw the Shot Put 28'6" to grab a seventh place medal of her own. While bouncing back-and-forth between singing the National Anthem and doing the High Jump, sophomore Mari McBride was able to breeze to a seventh place finish in the 300m running a PR of 44.21. Finally, sophomore Clara Fu turned in an eighth place finish in the 2 Mile by running a Division 1 qualifying time of 12:12.79.
The boys had a number of top tier performances on Saturday but none more impressive than the one turned in by sophomore Evan Eberle. LHS's young harrier began his day by running a tactically sound 1000m that saw him use a blistering last 200m to blow away the field by four seconds. His winning time of 2:39.66 is now the top time on The Minutemen's depth chart. However, his day was only just getting started. Running from the unseeded section, Eberle anchored the 4x400m relay of Traver Smith III, Alex Newton-Cheh, and Nick Lam with an unofficial split of 54.9 seconds to win the event with a time of 3:47.22. In addition to Eberle's big day, The Minutemen had two other athletes bring home multiple medals. Along with his gold medal from the 4x400, Smith III used a personal best time of 1:29.59 to take the silver medal in the 600m. The final double medal performance of the day was turned in by freshman Michael Gerfen. One of only three freshmen to qualify for the 16 man finals, Gerfen dropped his PR by over a half second to 8.77 and in doing so placed fifth in the 55m Hurdles. He was then back on the track at the end of the meet to lead off for an all freshmen 4x200m squad with an unofficial 25.1 split. His teammates, Miguel Jaramillo, Jayden Bai, and Branndon Uda-Thach ran tremendous legs of their own and their time of 1:39.22 ran in the fifth of eight heats held up to land them fifth overall.
