RESULTS
NEW YORK, NY - Saturday The Minutemen's nationally ranked 4x800m Relay traveled down to The Armory to compete in the most storied Indoor Track meet in the world. On the professional side, the 2020 edition of the Millrose Games featured three American records records being broken as Elle Purrier ran 4:16.85 to win the Women's Mile, Ajee Wilson took the Women's 800m with a time of 1:58.29, and reigning Men's 800m World Champion Donovan Brazier blew away the field by running 1:44.22.
Prior to the fireworks set off by the professionals, The Minutemen had their shot to compete against 11 other schools featuring some of the best prep middle distance runners in the country. On the opening leg, senior Micah Benson was battling through a physical race when a stray elbow from Glastonbury CT's Jadyn Nogueira connected with Benson's baton sending it flying. Benson scrambled to retrieve the baton and then fought to get back in the race over the next 500m. Despite the mishap, he would hand off the baton with an FAT split of 2:02.62. Next up was the youngest member of the relay, sophomore Evan Eberle. LHS's young harrier carried the baton to a FAT split of 2:02.34 before handing off to senior Josh Backert who thundered after the pack in front of him. After going out in a blistering 25.89 second for the first 200m, Backert settled in and handed off to Andrew McGovern, but not before turning in a PR split of 1:58.42. On the anchor leg McGovern would chase down a pair of teams and cross the line in 8:04.00 after splitting 2:00.64. In the end, The Minutemen finished ninth overall but fought hard the whole way to overcome some bad luck. After this race one certain thing is these boys can stay tough when things do not break their way, and they are primed to make an impact as the team moves through Championship Season.
