BOSTON, MA - On Saturday night the senior quartet of Brian Her, Colin Breen, Josh Backert, and Andrew McGovern had the opportunity to compete at the same meet as some of the best track and field athletes in the world. The 2020 Grand Prix boasted reigning 800m World Champion and American Record holder Donovan Brazier (pictured right), World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist in the 100m High Hurdles Nia Ali, World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist in the Steeplechase Emma Colburn, 17-time NCAA Champion Edward Cheserek, reigning NCAA 800m Champion Bryce Hoppel, and 1500m Bronze Medalist at the 2019 World Championships Konstanze Klosterhalfen among many others on the first stop and only North American stop of the World Athletics Indoor Tour.
The Minutemen went up against some of the top teams in the northeast in the High School Boys' Sprint Medley Relay. After 1600 action packed meters McGovern held off a hard charging Jack McLoughlin from La Salle Academy (RI) to win the event in the fastest time run anywhere in the country this season - 3:33.33. After a misfire of the gun Her blasted out from his four point stance to cover the opening 200m leg in 24.0 seconds before handing off to Breen. The senior sprinter used a strong move down the backstretch to vault his team up to second place, going through his 200m split in 22.8 seconds. From there Backert held position for The Minutemen with a 51.14 FAT split before handing off to McGovern. LHS's top 800m runner breezed through the first 400m in 57 seconds before blasting past McLoughlin as the two heard the bell signaling the final lap. McGovern was able to hold off a charge by McLoughlin down the backstretch and with a third and final surge took the tape for The Minutemen with a FAT split of 1:55.15. In addition to the win and the top time in the country, the boys' efforts qualified them for the Nationals Championships in March.
