RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - After suffering a disappointing loss by one-hundredth of a second at last week's All-State Championships, the four members of the The Minutemen's 4x800m Relay were looking to re-establish themselves as the class of the northeast and improve upon their seed time for Nationals in two weeks. With Wellesley High School - the State Champions - forgoing these New England Championships, LHS's relay compromised of seniors Selvin Backert, Joshua Backert, Andrew McGovern and sophomore Evan Eberle came into the meet as the top seed with the target on their back.
Selvin Backert led off for The Minutemen in what was a physical start. He was able to keep the boys in an extremely tight pack through the first 800m, handing off the baton with a split of 2:02.5. After Selvin's leg, the relay's youngest harrier Eberle took the baton and brought the team up to fourth place with a 2:01.6 split. From there it was 600m State Champion Joshua Backert who charged after the leaders and thundered into the lead in the first 200m of his leg. Backert kept the pressure on and handed off the baton, after running a personal best split of 1:57.2. McGovern took the baton as he did a week ago, with a commanding lead, but this time he was not going to relinquish even a small bit of that lead. The Minutemen's captain set the track on fire over four laps, and after a 1:55.3 split he let out a triumphant yell as he crossed the line to bring home the boys first Indoor New England Championship in over 20 years. LHS's time of 7:56.59 retakes their claim to the Bay State's #1 time, and ranks the boys US #11.
