RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - Tuesday night, in what has become the classic annual dual in the Middlesex League's Liberty Division, The Minutemen and the Tanners from Woburn faced off in a battle of the final two undefeateds. As they always do against LHS, both the Woburn boys and girls brought everything they had to the track. However The Minutemen simply had too much firepower as the girls won by a score of 60-40. While the boys mustered a 75-25 triumph of the Tanners. With the two wins, both the LHS boys and girls squads now have the inside track to the take the Liberty Division Regular Season Crown.
The girls had a number of great performances which led the team to victory, but non bigger than those turned in by Ava Criniti. LHS's freshman phenom began her day by cruising through the first 800m of the Mile behind Woburn junior Kacy Cole. Then with one lap to go, Criniti burst into the lead and unleashed a furious kick that Cole simply could not match. Her fast finish took her through the tape in a winning time of 5:27.33. Forty minutes later the young harrier was back on the track in the 1000m, again sitting back in the early stages of the race. Enlisting a nearly identical race strategy, Criniti sat back for the first 800m before once again ripping of her patented kick over that final lap. After passing Woburn senior Caroline Surrette, she glanced over her shoulder before charging down the final stretch to ensure her final move had put away her opponent. It had, as she took the tape in a Division 1 qualifying time of 3:07.11; her time was the sixth fastest time in Massachusetts so far this winter. Along with Criniti's big day, superstar sprinter Aleia Gisolfi-McCready led a sweep of the 300m with a time of 42.34 seconds. Sophomore Mari McBride (44.71) and junior Eileen Cannon (45.04) finished the job for LHS. The trio then teamed up with senior captain Keena Gao to run 1:47.80 in the 4x200m. In addition to the win, that time is the fastest run in Massachusetts this season.
In the boys meet senior captain Andrew McGovern debuted in his specialty, the 600m, with authority. McGovern blasted through the first 400m in 53 seconds before pulling away from the field to win in the MA #1 time of 1:22.71. To show the depth of this race, fellow classmate Josh Backert cruised to second place in a MA #2 time of 1:23.55; while Woburn senior Adam Canario's time of 1:24.50 was MA #5. After Backert finished the 600m, he was back thirty minutes later in the 300m. After getting beat to the break-line 150m into the race the senior remained cool under pressure and simply reeled in Woburn senior Andre Klimkiewicz, thundering through the finish line in a MA #3 36.03 seconds. Following Backert was a hard charging Colin Breen who nipped Klimkiewicz at the line to pick up second place for LHS in a Division 1 qualifying time of 36.67 seconds. Along with the long sprints, the long distance runners turned in a pair of D1 qualifying performances of their own. Senior Micah Benson used a 31 second final 200m to win the Mile in 4:32.78. He then came back in the 2 Mile to pace fellow classmate Matt "Big Mac" McAlarney to a win in 9:55.25. For his efforts, Benson picked up second place.
