LEXINGTON, MA - The Lexington High School Track & Field program has been on pause since the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly cut short the 2020 Indoor Track & Field season the day before last year's New Balance Indoor National Championships were set to begin. That pause finally ended this past week as The Minutemen were back in action - albeit under unique circumstances - as they took on Belmont High School in the first meet of the 2021 "Indoor" season.
Unprecedented times certainly have called for unprecedented measures over the past year, and for Middlesex League Track & Field that is only too true this season. Standard indoor track distances such as the 55m Dash and Hurdles, 300m, 600m, and 1000m are being competed, however, meets are being held on outdoor tracks. In addition, depending on each towns' COVID protocols, many meets are being contested virtually. This means that each team holds a meet in their hometown and then times are compared after the teams each complete them to determine a winner. While certainly not ideal circumstances, Lexington's coaching staff and athletes are more than willing to do what is necessary in order to have a chance to safely compete in the sport we all love given the situation the pandemic has put us all through. A special thank you goes out to LHS Athletic Director Naomi Martin and Superintendent Julie Hackett for all they have done to make this "Indoor" Track season possible for our student athletes.
With all of the ground rules established, The Minutemen opened their season on a balmy March afternoon and did so in style. Both the boys and girls came away with narrow victories over the Marauders. The boys won by a score of 55-44, while the girls won by a slightly more narrow margin of 54-46. The girls were led by star sophomore Ava Criniti who began her season with a 5:20.0 time in the Mile. That mark was bested by Belmont freshman Ellie Shea (5:02.2). However, unlike Shea, Criniti was back in the 1000m where she took the victory easily with a time of 3:12.9. While there will be no State or Division Championships this year, both of Criniti's marks would have qualified her for last year's Division 1 Championships. Along with Criniti's performances, junior Mari McBride came up big for The Minutemen by winning the High Jump with a leap of 4'11". That mark also would have qualified her for the 2020 Divisionals. In addition to the High Jump, McBride, along with freshman Maddie Parks, and seniors Eileen Cannon and Aleia-Gisolfi McCready helped the girls 4x200m Relay breeze to victory with another would be Divisional qualifying time of 1:49.1.
On the boys side LHS's Bomb Squad went unchecked as sophomore Jack Ngo (41'4"), senior captain Jarret Dlugy (40'9.5"), and sophomore Allen Jiang (35'6.5") broke out the first golden broom of the season to sweep the Shot Put. Another notable performance came from junior Ollie DiCerbo who not only earned his first varsity points, but who raced to his first victory by winning the 1000m in a would be League Championship qualifying time of 2:47.8. Not to be outdone, sophomore Kyle Taylor picked up his first career varsity points and victory as well by winning the 2 Mile in a time of 11:22.4.
