SCHOOL RECORDS, AND AN ELECTRIC FINISH IN THE MILE HIGHLIGHT DAY 1 AT NE INVITE
Meet Information
MSTCA Northeast Invitational, Day 1
January 14, 2022
Reggie Lewis Center - Boston, MA
RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - The Minutemen got off to a hot start on Friday night for the first day of the Northeast Invitational. The three day meet is featuring some of the top talent from around the region, and The Minutemen showed up early and often as competition got underway at Reggie Lewis.
Senior captain Evan Eberle toed the line in the seeded section of the Mile, fresh off his 4:30 effort against Reading last week. When the gun fired a trio of runners charged away from the field and Eberle settled into the chase pack. The group came through the half mile in a quick 2:14, but it was not until the final 400 that Eberle asserted himself. As he crossed the line with two laps to go, the LHS harrier dashed to the front of the pack and charged after the leaders. Using a blistering 61-second final quarter mile, he would hunt down Nike Cross Northeast Regionals Champion Aidan Cox of Coe Brown Northwood Academy (NH) to finish third overall in a new PR of 4:23.89. That time is the fastest run by an LHS athlete since Thomas Lingard (LHS 18') ran 4:17.24 in 2018. Along with Eberle's big day, junior Jack Ngo won the Weight Throw with a best mark of 49'1". Not to be outdone, junior Alexios Kontothanassis competed in the Triple Jump. An event rarely competed indoors in Massachusetts, Kontothanassis medaled in the event last spring at the Divisional Championships, and showed he is poised to follow that up with an even better performance this year. Kontothanassis's best leap took him 39'0", placed third overall, and established a new LHS record in the event.
The Lex Girls had a number of personal bests turned in on Friday night, but none stood out more than that of sophomore Katie Atkins. A Hurdler by trade, Atkins has been learning to Pole Vault over the past year. And, in her first competition, Atkins cleared 8'0" on her second attempt to establish a new LHS record. In addition to the school record, the mark landed her in a tie for seventh place overall. Along with the big night for Atkins, fellow classmate Quin Tandeih (35'11") dropped a seven foot PR in the Weight Throw to place second overall.
