RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - On a dreary late December day, The Minutemen headed into the comfort of the BU Indoor Track & Tennis Center to write another page in the history of the Lexington vs Woburn rivalry. After a run of success by the Tanners in the late 2010s, The Minutemen have had the upper hand in Track and Cross Country as the Boys and Girls have won the last seven meetings between the schools. On Thursday the LHS Boys continued their run of success, easily dispatching the Tanners by a score of 86-13. The Lex Girls however, did not fair the same and were narrowly edged out by a final score of 48-52.
Despite the defeat in the girls meet, it was the efforts of the Distance Squad among others that kept things close for LHS. Early on in the meet it was senior captain Clara Fu and junior Uma Sanker who controlled the pace of the Mile over the first 800m, until Fu cruised away from the pack to take the tape in a new personal best time - and Divisional Championship qualifying mark - of 5:25.63. Meanwhile, Sanker had an absolute battle on her hands in the name of Woburn sophomore Emilia Rivera. The two were neck-and-neck down the backstretch of the final lap until Rivera pulled ahead with just over 100m to go. But, Sanker remained calm and made one final charge at the line to just edge out Rivera and pickup second place with a new PR of 5:32.60. Both Fu and Sanker doubled back later in the meet to score valuable points for their team, with Fu breezing to victory in 2 Mile in a time of 11:50.18. While Sanker gave her all to pickup another second place finish - this time to Woburn senior Nubia Pereria - in the 1000m with another PR of 3:19.98. Along with their efforts, freshman Brett Castro (13:01.57) ran an over 20 second PR in the 2 Mile to place third and qualify for the League Championships. While sophomore Samara McVey was able to come up with a season best 3:27.19 to place third in the 1000m.
For Lexington's Boys, the breakout performance of the meet came from junior sprinter Parth Kocheta. A last minute addition to the varsity lineup, Kocheta grabbed his opportunity and ran with it all the way to a first place finish in the 55m Dash. His time of 7.13 seconds is the fastest time run by an LHS sprinter this season. Along with Kocheta, senior captain Ollie DiCerbo showed the poise of a savvy veteran as he navigated his way to a double gold performance in the Mile and 1000m. Opening his mile in a pedestrian 75 second first quarter, he slowly wound up the pace over the next six laps to finish with a time of 4:43.81. He then came back to even split his way to a new personal best and Divisional qualifying time of 2:43.20 in the 1000m. In the 2 Mile, it was fellow classmate and captain Evan Eberle who toed the line for the first time in his LHS career at that distance, and showed he can be a legitimate threat at any distance over 600m. Blasting out from the field with a 4:55 first mile, Eberle used a strong 33 second final lap to cross the line in a Divisional qualifying time of 9:57.08. That is also the fastest time run in the Middlesex League so far this season.
