SMITH'S FRESHMEN US #10 PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS LAST CHANCE MEET FOR LHS
Meet Information
MSTCA Qualifier Meet
February 11, 2023
The Track at New Balance - Boston, MA
RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - With less than a week until the MIAA Division 1 Championships, a group of a dozen LHS student-athletes traveled into the Reggie Lewis Center for one final shot at achieving the necessary qualifying standard, or improving upon their seed time. All totaled, five athletes turned in personal best performances, while two members of the LHS Team earned their spot at Friday's Divisional Meet.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the meet came from freshmen Colin Smith. The young harrier toed the line in the 1000m having a personal best that was just tenths-of-a-second off the D1 standard, and he was eager to get there with this his final chance. When the gun fired, he stuck himself into the middle of the pack and cruised through the early stages of the race running a beautifully even split effort. After crossing the line at 800m as the clock read 2:11, he made a final dash around the oval, closing in 32 seconds to set a new PR of 2:43.93. That time was the fastest run by a freshmen anywhere in Massachusetts this winter, and puts him #10 in the nation in the event among ninth graders. Along with Smith's big day, senior Wesley Jarvis was the other LHS competitor to make the Divisional standard. Running in the fourth of nine heats, Jarvis got out to a strong start, coming around the track in 28 seconds for the first 200m. He would cross the 400 mark at 58 seconds, needing just under a 32-second final lap to make his mark. He did just that, crossing the line in 1:29.84 he broke the elusive 1:30 barrier for the first time and qualified for Divisionals in the 600m.
