BOSTON, MA - Things were off to a great start for The Minutemen on Friday after the 4x200m Relay's #2 all-time performance. Saturday, Lexington's best were back at The Track at New Balance for the third day of competition with the Hurdle Crew and the Weight Throwers set to take center stage. However, perhaps the best performance of the day came from the youngest athlete in an LHS uniform, freshman Andrew Gu.
Gu got things off to a hot start Saturday on the straightaway in the Freshmen Division of the 60m Dash. The youngest of LHS's vaunted sprint squad came in with a PR of 7.55 from early last month. However, he would have to make it happen on Saturday without the luxury of starting blocks, as they were not allowed for athletes competing in the Freshmen Division. Despite this, Gu made it happen. Blasting out from his four point stance, and driving through the early phase of the race, LHS's ninth grader crossed the line with a new PR of 7.49 seconds to finish 28th overall. Along with the freshman's big day, it was the Girls 55m Shuttle Hurdle Relay that stole the show. Having achieved the standard in the 50y Shuttle Hurdle - which features just three hurdles for each leg - back in January, the crew of junior Katie Atkins, sophomore Heidi Alexanderian, freshman Monjola Finnih, and junior Amandine Mangon were out as the first LHS team to ever run the five hurdle relay. Atkins got things off to a strong start with an official split of 9.5 seconds. The underclassmen both turned in tremendous efforts with Alexanderian and Finnih turning in unofficial splits of 10.1 and 10.2 respectively. Then it was up to Mangon to bring them home. And bring the team home she did. Running a beautiful anchor leg, Mangon glided over the five barriers, and with a dip at the line stopped the clock for The Minutemen at 38.35 seconds. That time established the new LHS Record in the event. For Mangon, her unofficial split of 8.5 seconds was well under her official PR of 9.19 seconds, and helped land the crew in 23rd place overall.
