The Track at New Balance - Boston, MA
RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - On Sunday, The Minutemen participated in an invite-only showcase of the region's top prep 400m talent. Athletes ages 5 to 18 competed in an afternoon meet in Brighton, with the highlight of the meet being the 4x400m invitational. The Minutemen's best competed against the nation's #1 ranked Bishop Loughlin (NY) boys, an all-star team relay from the New England Elite Track Club, and to top it all off, they had rematch with the team from Newton North that bested LHS for the state title last spring by less than three-tenths of a second. With this stellar field assemble, the goal of achieving the New Balance Indoor Nationals standard was well within reach.
The gun went off and the LHS senior Branndon Uda-Thach charged out from his blocks. Bishop Loughlin's leadoff leg went to the early lead, followed by Newton North, but using his signature late surge Uda-Thach kept his team close and handed off the baton after an FAT split of 51.80. Next up was senior captain Alexios Kontothanassis who breezed around the track with an FAT split of 52.47. The only underclassmen on the relay, junior McKenna O'Hare-Gibson was next and gave his team a huge PR split, clocking in at 51.47 before handing off to senior Jake Wheaton. Getting out quickly, Wheaton charged after the field trying to narrow the gap and race the clock to achieve the nationals mark of 3:28.00. In the end, The Minutemen's anchor came through for his relaymates with the fastest split - 50.60. Bishop Loughlin lowered its US #1 time to 3:20.79 to win the race. Newton North ran a state leading and US #2 time of 3:21.98 to finish second. New England Elite Track Club finished just behind in 3:21.99 to grab the bronze medal. Crossing the line in 3:26.32, The Minutemen ran an MA #2 and US #8 time that qualifies them for the National Championships in March. It may only be January, but it is clear that at this early stage of the season The Minutemen are building towards a special season.
