BOSTON, MA - Thursday evening The Minutemen's junior varsity athletes had their final opportunities to see how a season's worth of work made them stack up against fellow competitors across the Middlesex League. While the meet was not scored, and no team title was officially award, after four hours of action it was clear that as good as The Minutemen's deep varsity squad is, there is plenty more in the pipeline. LHS won 7 events on the night, and placed athletes in the top eight in all but four events between the Boys and Girls teams.
On the boys' side, the highlight of the meet came from freshman Eric House. The young harrier came into the meet as the top seed, and hoped to punch his ticket to the Varsity League Championships in February in the 1000m. When the gun fired, he charged out to the lead and maintain a controlled pace early in the race. Through 600m, he and Reading junior Michael Carroll were stride-for-stride with two laps to go. Then House made his move and broke away as the two approached the bell lap. In his final lap, the LHS freshman poured it on, and with a blistering 32-second 200m split he crossed the line with a new PR of 2:47.99. In addition to making the League standard, that time dipped under the New Balance Indoor Nationals Freshman Division mark as well.
The Lex Girls had a number of strong performances, but it was junior Caitlin Lennox's breakthrough day in the Dash that led the way and set the tone for The Minutemen. Lennox came into the meet with a PR of 8.03, and hoped she could find her way under the elusive 8-second barrier. A good omen from a member of the coaching staff had her feeling like something big was going to happen before the prelims, and sure enough it came to fruition as the junior sprinter blasted her way to a time of 7.84 seconds, which gave her the Varsity League standard. However, her job was not finished as she needed to line up again in the finals. In those finals Lennox was even better. She ran a tremendous race and crossed the line in a sizzling time of 7.80 seconds, which is just one-hundredth of a second off the MIAA Division 1 Championship mark. It is clear that she is peaking just at the right time, as Championship Season approaches.
